Honoring Those Who Have Sacrificed For Our Freedom…
I always lead this story with a reiteration of what Memorial Day means in America: it’s a day to honor those men and women who sacrificed their lives serving in the military to protect our freedoms…it is a day to remember and honor them…
It has also become a day to celebrate with friends and family, usually outside around a grill, so here are some of my favorite recipes for sliders – from around the world and an “All-American” one too!
Oh, and Robbie asked a great question: why is it called a “slider?”
Well, here’s the answer!
The name originated in the 1940s, when sailors in the U.S. Navy would refer to mini-burgers as “sliders” because of their extreme greasiness. In just one or two bites, the burger would just slide right down!
The All-American Slider!
While you can stack this slider a number of different ways – and as you can see as high as yo like, an “all-American slider” always uses some traditional flavors:
I try to really stack my burger with all of those great flavors – here’s one way to build it:
Top Bun Cheddar Cheese – melted and dripping Bacon! Bacon! Bacon! Slider Patty Tomato and sliced onion Pickle Mayonaise, mayonaise, mayonaise! Bottom Bun
See that? DO NOT DEVIATE – this is perfection.

Very true about that – and while there are many memorials and tributes on this day, it is also a day where families gather and do a to of outdoor cooking!
I should include this in my story: The name originated in the 1940s, when sailors in the U.S. Navy would refer to mini-burgers as “sliders” because of their extreme greasiness. In just one or two bites, the burger would just slide right down!
Robbie, I added the definition to the story. The Navy used to serve their sailors bite sized burgers that were greasy and the sailors said they would “slide” right down!
Thank you, John. Memorial Day is so important; remembering and honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, and also thanking those who serve today. The All-American Slider is perfect for Memorial Day BBQs. Yum!
You can't take the Scotland out of a girl... Reel entertainment reviews and more from that Darlin Husband’s Scottish, square-eyed and film-mad wife living in Finland.
that’s interesting about the name slider. Sounds like your Memorial Day is like our Anzac Day, when we remember the fallen and those who served.

Ah, that makes perfect sense. It is a great name for a burger. Thanks for the explanation.

Too easy to forget these days Beth, and they sacrificed so we could argue like children in a free society.
