In this time of #shelteringathome, many of us have caught up on movies, TV shows and as you can see, all of the books we’ve neglected…and some of us have cooked as well!
“What The Friday!?!?!?!” Just How Big Are Those Cans?!?!?!
I will answer that question, but first, you need to know how it happened.
Yes, this week’s edition of “What The Friday!?!?!” is the result of a DISASTROUS on-line ordering mistake I made!
Here’s how it began:
I saw an ad for canned vegetables, including these diced potatoes. Knowing that shopping was going to be a more trying experience when told to stay at home, I decided to see if I could order some online and have them shipped to my home…and I could – so I ordered some canned potatoes, corn and mushrooms.
They are sold in all stores in 14.5 oz cans…
And here is what I got:
Wha-Wha-WHAT The Friday?!?!
When these showed up, I knew immediately there was a problem – like the fact that each can was the SIZE OF MY HEAD:
So here’s what happened: I bought them from an online store – and I ordered canned potatoes, mushroom and corn – as well as diced tomatoes…well, the tomatoes, the ONLY item that wasn’t available, were in 14.5 oz cans on the order….the others were 10.6 ounces…..except they weren’t:
As my Wife was eager to share with friends, I mis-read the order and instead bought ONE HUNDRED SIX ounce cans!
Yes, each can is SIX POUNDS!
So what do you do with six pounds of marinated Mushrooms? Well, the can offered a few ideas:
I decided there was going to have to be a 3-4 day menu creation to make use of the entire can – so I made Turkey Meatballs with Mushroom Sauce, pan-fried mushrooms with garlic and parsley, and of course, this classic:
Tuna Casserole, Anyone?
That’s right, I made a large baking dish of Tuna Casserole, stuffed to the gills with mushrooms, and Cheese as well – and it tasted great!
I will share what I make with the potatoes and corn as well…I won’t waste any of it, and the cans don’t expire for more than 2 years, so I will be OK – and hopefully our quarantine will end soon and I will invite a group over to celebrate with canned veggies!
Now, while my “mega eating” was a BIG MISTAKE, some are actually making BIG MONEY from it!
Dig Into This “Mukbang!”
First of all, I could NOT love this more!

This is hilarious,John. This is confirmation of a phrase we use a bit in Australia :”Only in America”.
I thought of my daughter seeing those huge cans of mushrooms. She is quite sensory with her food and can’t stand mushrooms because they’re slimy. It’s quite common I’ve since found out. She’d be spitting chips.
I also thought you’d enjoy this little family story. I have two sister-in-laws. One is a very good cook, vegetarian makes everything from scratch and makes massive servings to feed a crowd. The other sister apparently lives on canned or tinned food and it was thought she might die of “tinnia” as a result.
Even if you don’t think it’s funny, we had a good laugh.
Meanwhile, we seem to be living on spuds and mince dishes. I cooking huge dishes to try to get a couple of week’s worth of meals into the freezer. It’s hard to know the longer term impact of this virus but I feel with a full freezer, stocked pantry and enough toilet paper, we will at least have a fighting chance.
Best wishes,
Rowena

Thanks for sharing that story, I laughed out loud at the word “tinnia”! I am using these cans responsibly, and they will last for 2 years – I just can’t believe I mis-red the size as 10.6 oz instead of 106! It was a company I hadn’t ordered from before, and NOTHING suggested they sell restaurant-sized cans! Stay safe and thanks again for the comment!

You too, John. These are really crazy times and those cans summed it up well.

Thank you! I made corn fritters yesterday and it was great, and made a zucchini/corn/cheese bake as well…made a fish stew with the potatoes, as well as mashed potatoes with salmon…we are getting through it! Thanks for commenting and hope you are able to stay safe!

Great chuckle! If you get tired of corn you can use as bait to catch small flounder. Food pantries won’t turn you down.

I wish I was near a fishing hole, would make great bait indeed!

LOL John. I try not to laugh at a person’s plight, but this is just plain funny. I’m also confident you’ll find some fun way to make both some mileage and fun from the situation.
What’s that great corn recipe from Chevy’s that’s so good they serve it with your entree as a first step to dessert? I’d be on that in a moment and with this amount of corn to work with might stay there through the whole shutdown of the state.

Hi John, this is so funny. I do have a question: Did the tab at checkout not alert you that something is wrong? Happy cooking and baking with all these HUGE tins of food

Great question Esme…the thing is, it was part of a larger order from an online shop I hadn’t used, and not only did I assume a shipping fee, it turns out these cans were really reasonable! I really did read the order info as 10.6 ounces, since the tomatoes in the order were listed as 14.5…live and learn!

Wouldn’t they have cost a little more than 10.6 oz can ? The price was never an indicator ?

John, I’m visiting from the weekly coffee share link up. This is so funny. Good thing you can cook. Families with teenagers would welcome these cans if you don’t use up all of them.

Thanks for the comment! I am cooking with them and have already donated two to others who could use them!

Oh man, I love this. Hysterical! They really are as big as your head–not that your head is bigger than it should be. But that’s way too much veg, even for the End Times!

Well, I promise not to waste any – I am making 4 different recipes with each can over 3 days…that said, once I made it through the mushrooms yesterday I said “no more for awhile!”

Hilarious, I’m sure the food bank will enjoy some of those cans. Were you tipped off by the forklift bringing the box to your door?

Ted, NOTHING in the online order form suggested they were oversized cans!

Well, box wine will do that sometimes.
