RIP Author Julie Powell…
Such sad news. As reported online just now:
“Julie Powell, a writer and home cook who became a culinary phenomenon while trying to make every recipe in Julia Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking,” a year-long project that she chronicled in an irreverent blog and a book, “Julie & Julia,” that was adapted into a hit movie, died Oct. 26 at her home in Olivebridge, N.Y. She was 49. The cause was cardiac arrest.”
Julie spent a year cooking from the Julia Child cookbook – and it made her famous…

Powell’s book became a huge best-seller, and resulted in the hit film “Julie & Julia”, in which she is portrayed by Amy Adams, while the legendary Chef and Cookbook Author Julia Child is portrayed brilliantly by Meryl Streep…
“Julie & Julia!”
“Julie & Julia” intertwines the story of a food blogger, Julie Powell, who makes a different Julia Child recipe every day for a year, and becomes an internet sensation. We go back and forth between her story and the life of Julia Child – with an absolutely mesmerizing performance by Streep.
Here is the trailer:
Powell was candid in her memoir, and the film captures her struggle to juggle a full time job, a daily recipe, and a husband…
The real joy of the film is the story of how Julia Child became JULIA CHILD. Watching Meryl Streep capture the honesty and inspiration of Julia Child is a revelation. She is pitch perfect capturing her warmth, insecurity, and creative genius, and Streep was deservedly nominated again for the role…this part of the film is pure magic…
As I said, Alex and I are avid fans of Julia’s, and I got to cook on her provencal stove, thanks to the great Cookbook Author Patricia Wells:
Alex and I took her cooking class in Provence, and Julia gave Patricia the stove that we cooked on there! See the story here:
I also got the chance to see Julia’s real kitchen:
Yes, it exists in a museum! See it here:
It’s shocking to lose someone so young, and Powell will always be remembered for her terrific memoir and the film that came from it…RIP to Julie Powell…

HI John, you have mentioned this film before and Meryl Streep is a fantastic actress. I was told once that I looked like her which I took as a great compliment. Very sad that Julie died so you. A bit frightening really because society is not attuned to young death any more.

Such a shame that she should suffer a cardiac arrest at that young age. You gave her a worthy tribute, John.
Best wishes, Pete.
