Happy “National Cheeseburger Day 2025!”
Well, some of you may know that I love cheeseburgers – I grew up working in a hamburger stand and that love has stayed with me since…

This love has grown as I recently took on making smashburgers at home – they are the latest craze in the burger world….here’s a look:
The key is to put raw onions on top, and when you flip them over the onions caramelize under the meat….see the entire recipe, including that special sauce, by clicking here:
Now, time for some very important history about the burger!
HAMBURGERS FIRST BECAME POPULAR IN THE U.S. IN 1904
The hamburger was a well-kept secret until the World’s Fair in 1904, held in St Louis Missouri. A certain “Uncle” Fletcher David from Allen, Texas, set up a hamburger stand and sold hamburgers. The rest is history.
Speaking of history:

See “Burger Beast” Gonzalez wrote the book about the history of the burger!
See more great history of the burger here!

AMERICANS EAT 55 BILLION BURGERS A YEAR
How popular have hamburgers become in America? An average American eats three burgers a week, translating to around 55 billion per year!
And if they were these ones, I’d hit that number myself!

These grilled onion burgers are cooled SLOWWWWWWW, and while a bit messy, it’s worth the extra napkins – take a look!
White Manna in Hackensack, New Jersey is worth the trip – see my review here!
MCDONALD’S SERVES 75 HAMBURGERS PER SECOND
The fast-food giant has branches all over the world and sells the most burgers worldwide: 75 or more burgers every second of every day!
I love the Big Mac, but one time I did a mashup to share:

THE CHEESEBURGER WAS INVENTED BY A TEENAGER
A cheeseburger is definitely an all-American favorite. However, do you know the origin story of the cheeseburger? Many food historians give a 16-year-old boy, Lionel Stenberger, the credit for adding an American cheese slice to a frying hamburger. This happened in 1924, at his father’s Rite Spot sandwich shop in Pasadena, California. He liked it, and his father agreed, which is how the cheeseburger came to be.
In another version of the story, Lionel burned a hamburger and tried to save the dish by adding a slice of cheese. He served it to a customer and the customer enjoyed the new addition to the hamburger.

These great facts came from The Charbar Company, a restaurant on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina! Terrific stuff!

Remember that terrific burger history book? Well it comes from Mr. Burger Beast himself, and he’s got all of this year’s best burger deals, so check it out here!
Of course, I bit into some of America’s great burgers over at my “all food all the time” site as well:

I recently shared the story of In-n-Out, which is one of America’s greatest cult burgers….they are expanding too! Click here to see where – and where NOT!

I was a day early, John. 😊 We ate out last night at a local pub/restaurant and I had a cheeseburger. I added an extra pattie, fries, onion rings, and a fried egg. Delicious!
Best wishes, Pete.
