Welcome To The Beginning Of Time!
That’s how it feels when you travel to Greece: with the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and so much more!

My “Travel A – Z” Series Heads To Greece!
For this installment of my “Trade A – Z” series, I landed on the letter “G”, which took me back to an incredible trip my wife and I took right as the world awakened from the covid nightmare…here’s what I found online that sums up Greece well:
“It’s the birthplace of democracy and the Olympic Games, the Greek language is one of the oldest in the world, 80% of the country is mountainous, it has over 6,000 islands, and it’s known for its delicious cuisine, especially olive oil.”
Oh, and they forgot to mention the sunsets…

Some say they are the best in the world…for example, this one from the island of Santorini:

Every night was spectacular…we always study up before going somewhere for the first time, so here’s a bit of a primer on this incredible country:
Ancient Greece was a northeastern Mediterranean civilization, existing from the Greek Dark Ages of the 12th–9th centuries BC to the end of classical antiquity ( c. 600 AD), that comprised a loose collection of culturally and linguistically related city-states and communities.
And islands! Here is one spectacular example:

Hidden on a massive rock rising from the Aegean Sea lies a breathtaking medieval gem — Monemvasia, Greece!
Connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, this ancient fortress city was founded in the 6th century and still holds the charm of a bygone era.
Stroll along cobblestone streets, admire stone-built houses, and feel time stand still as you explore its Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman past.
Surrounded by towering walls and unforgettable sea views, Monemvasia is truly a living postcard!
“Credits to the rightful owner” for these photos…you see, we never made it there but that is one of many reasons we will go back to Greece…we did make it to a number of unique locations, like the Greek island Santorini, where you can stare at this:
Skaros Rock is a prominent volcanic rock formation and historic landmark located on the island of Santorini, Greece. Situated below the village of Imerovigli, it was once the site of a thriving medieval fortress town.

Did I mention that is is used as the backdrop for spectacular photos like this one? I actually shot this photo shoot as it was underway on the roof of the room below ours!
Oh, and Guess what? You can climb this rock – so we did! See how difficult it was by reading that story here:
In Athens, you can see a unique ceremony every hour of the day and night:

This is the “changing of the guard” ceremony, and people gather to watch all day and night as it occurs at the top of every hour!
See more about this unique ceremony here:
We loved the pomp and circumstance of the ceremony – and yes, we also got to gaze out at The Acropolis at night as well, and what an incredible job they do lighting that up as well – with just a little help from the moon:

Of course, during the day The Acropolis is open to the public, and you can climb to the top to see The Parthenon up close!

Yes, it’s as spectacular as you hope it would be – here’s a look at the tour Alex and I took:
We saw a number of incredible Ancient Greek ruins, all in the ongoing process of restoration – like The Temple Of Poseidon:

It was located on the southernmost tip of the European continent – and has a wild myth to go with it – click here to find out more:
Time now to head to a couple of the Greek Islands, like Mykonos, which has some really cool windmills – and a LOT of wind as you are about to hear!
Mykonos is known as a party island, but you don’t have to go crazy here…you can do a lot of hiking, beach combing, or perhaps you want to sit and watch someone else doing something very athletic like this:
After all that exercise, I got hungry – so went ate at a restaurant on Mykonos where they sell you what they caught that morning! See our food adventure here:
There is so much to see and do in Greece, this is just the tip of the iceberg!
I will continue my “Travel A -Z” series with a look next at a unique country with the letter “H”…but if you want to see what I’ve done already, check out my look at Egypt here:
