Exploring The Greek Islands By Ferry!
It’s a visually stunning way to travel in Greece – take a ferry from one island to the other! And of course, your reward when landing is lots of chances to have “food with a view!”
The first thing we learned when we told a local the various islands we were going to visit on our first trip to Greece was that there were always three others we just HAD to see as well!
We did our best, and as most do, we started our adventure in Athens, where we did the stuff you are supposed to do:
The Parthenon and the Acropolis are iconic, AND we had our first “food with a view” from the top of the city:

After our whirlwind 2-day tour of the city, it was time to head to the island of Mykonos – but instead of a 40 minute flight, we went by a 4 hour ferry – why?
It’s a completely different way to see Greece!
First of all, you only have to arrive 15 minutes before departure – it’s a breeze to board, you can stow your bags at the entrance, and you find a seat and relax…
I went up on the outer deck to see the other islands go by…because you literally cruise right by them – many nothing but rocks jutting out of the sea, sometimes with just a lonely lighthouse staring back!
Oh, did I tell you it can be windy up there?

As you can see, many of the islands seem uninhabited, most have no trees or vegetation – but some do have beautiful seaside villages!
It looks like a painting!
Sure, you can fly to the bigger islands much faster, but you’d miss this beautiful landscape as you pass island after island in the sea:
It’s a really enjoyable way to travel, with various prices based on where you sit, and you can spend the whole time outside in the sun if you like!
Here’s the port town where the ferry unloads, and that is an adventure in itself!
Here’s how the port revealed itself to us – get ready for a very noisy reveal as we gathered by the car draw bridge as it slowly revealed the island close up:
Gorgeous!
The boat pulls in, you grab your bag, and find a cab to take you to your hotel – so easy and fun!
Once on Mykonos, we explored Mykonos Town and its iconic row of very windy windmills:
These windmills are so iconic, staring out at the sea perched near a cliff outside of town:
Afterwards we had an incredible meal at the legendary Kastro’s restaurant, which has the most instagrammable outdoor seating corridor in the world!
We sat on one of three outside mini-terraces, and you can see the sunset it gave us, an incredible “food with a view”-

While in Mykonos, we stayed at the incredible Santa Marina Resort…with this incredible view at night, and where every day we saw a very unique surfing technique!

We also walked some of the island’s gorgeous beaches, and ate at one of the island’s most iconic beachside cafes:
Nikolas Taverna is famous – you can pick your fresh fish – caught that morning by the owner!

When it was time to leave, we also took the ferry back to the mainland – here I am saying goodbye to the island:
Of course, after Mykonos we also had an amazing visit to the island of Santorini as well, where we actually climbed this:
