Have You Had A New York Cheesesteak Sandwich?
Well, I did – and I got it in the most unusual place: at one of New York’s best pizzerias!
I shared my review of Mama’s Too! a while ago, and teased that it wasn’t the reason I originally went there!
That’s right, I didn’t go there for the “Angry Nonna” at all!

When I shared my review, I admitted that it was actually my SECOND time to the restaurant, because I went there the first time for an entirely different reason – and here it is!

A Cheesesteak!
Yes, I went to a pizza joint for one of the most iconic sandwiches – the cheesesteak! I read an article about the best ones in New York and was surprised to find it here…since Philly has the reputation for them:

Here’s the official definition: A cheesesteak is a sandwich made with thinly sliced beefsteak and melted cheese on a long roll, originating in Philadelphia. While there are regional and personal variations, the key components are the meat, cheese, and bread.
And they make them at Mama’s Too on 105th and Broadway on New York’s upper west side!

There I am, holding my sandwich! I waited in line for only a few minutes when I stepped up and blurted out: “I’ll take a Philly Cheesesteak!”
Without missing a beat the young cashier replied:
“That’s one CHEESESTEAK SANDWICH?” THE WORD “PHILADELPHIA” WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND AND I REALIZED MY HUGE FAUX PAS…THESE TWO CITIES FIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING!
I replied quickly and moved away, ashamed. The sandwich took about ten minutes, and then I took it home…let’s take a look as I take it out of that bag:
This is what’s known as a tease, because the rest of the review, including turning the camera on myself while I bite into this, is on my “all food all the time” site…if you want to see more, please check it out there – thanks!
I saw a story that said Philly has Cheesesteaks while New York has “Chopped Cheese” – and what are those? Let’s have a listen:
It’s the sound the cook makes as he chops up the ingredients for this iconic sandwich…see my first time trying it here!
Speaking of sandwiches, what about one of New York’s oldest?

Yep, this is one of the oldest foods in New Yori!” See what it is and where I got it by clicking on my story here!
I am sharing and storing all of these recipes on my food website “Bite! Eat! Repeat!” – it’s your site for all things food – if you like what you see, please click on my link and follow this blog as well!
If you like the story, share it with friends on social media! Thanks!

Mama Toos Cheesesteak looks pretty good. Love the gooey mess. Love a great cheesesteak. Yes, it’s a regular staple in Southeastern PA. I’m convinced that the roll makes the difference between a so-so and a great cheesesteak. And as far as Pat’s or Geno’s in Philly, I would skip both tourist spots and and stop by other choices (Dalessandros, Jim’s South St., DelRossi’s, Angelos, or a million others) in the region. And yes, I wouldn’t mind stopping by Bradley Cooper’s spot but not sure I would want to wait an hour for a cheesesteak. Love em, but it would have to be out of this world. Ha. ha.

Thanks for the Philly list and I agree, not worth waiting an hour just because he’s a movie star! Always great hearing from you!

You only have to see the queue of people outside to know that’s a good place to buy food. I have never had a cheese steak sandwich, but would definitely try one!
Best wishes, Pete.

Pete, the Actor Bradley Cooper opened a Philly-style Cheesesteak shop here in the East Village and the lines are a mile long…he routinely pops in and makes sandwiches for awhile and talks to customers…reviews are great but I won’t wait an hour for a sandwich!

I caught up with a blogging friend near Philadelphia a few years back. He teaches at Villanova. We had an amazing day together as he played tour guide for me around the city. We stopped at Geno’s for a Philly cheesesteak sandwich. He was telling telling me about the legendary rivalry between Geno’s and Pat’s, which as a food connoisseur , you probably know all about.
