What’s A “Juicy Lucy” – And Why Don’t I Have One?
Don’t worry, it’s a question I had as well – until I discovered the story of this legendary burger from Minnesota!
I shared this a few weeks ago on my food blog but decided to give “Juicy Lucy” one more taste!
First, what is a “Juicy Lucy” and where did it come from?
“HOME OF THE ORIGINAL JUCY LUCY!”
That’s what Matt’s Bar & Grill, now a Minneapolis landmark, proclaims proudly! Matt’s began in 1954 as a neighborhood burger eatery – and fate steppe3d in shortly after they opened
Founder Matt Bristol says the “Jucy Lucy” was created when a local customer asked for two hamburger patties with a slice of cheese in the middle – and a legend was born!
So naturally, I had to make one – and thanks to Goldbelly, I was able to have some shipped to me – let’s see what happened next!
Here’s what you get in the package: a bun for the end result, some pickles, a nice pack of seasonings, and the “Juicy Lucy” burger patty…which is actually something a bit different – check this out:
Yes, the cheddar cheese is inside the two patties, which are sealed tight to keep it inside as you cook it on the stove…
I turned it once after ten minutes and then added the seasoning salt and it cooks up with that delicious sound we’ve all come to love…
The shipment included a bun, some pickles and seasoning salt, and I added raw onion slices and Japanese “kewpie” mayo! After twenty minutes, here’s the finished result!
I made this burger on two separate occasions, and both times the burger was a bit raw, which I like, and the cheese was melty but not oozing too much…a bit more slow cooking would have done even better – but it was delicious regardless!
As some of you know, I have been making short videos showing the entire process and did so again here…enjoy the making of a juicy Lucy – plus my taste test here:
I am a fan of unique burgers, whether I make them at home or try them at restaurants…here are a few examples of both: first, check out the “Squeeze With Cheese” here:
I love a great burger, especially when there is a unique method of preparation, like this one I found in Hackensack New Jersey:
This is the White Manna Burger – and the secret is this: on a flat-top grill they SLOOOOOOWLY cook the meat – covered with raw sliced onion!
When they flip them, the onions are caramelized underneath – take a look:

Re-watching this incredible sunset from the Greek island of Santorini is just the thing after a long day at work – it’s a terrific place to explore and take incredible photos like these:
We watched this our entire time on the island, as these iconic poses are part of what makes Santorini so magical – get a closer look here:

HI John, I would cook mine a little longer but other than that, it looks good.

I agree it was a bit underdone for me as well but i shared what the result was because i own my mistakes! I didn’t want the cheese to ooze out so didn’t press on it and did t want the outside too done but i should have given it 3-4 more minutes to be sure!

Okay, some people prefer their meat rarer.

The roll looks nice and light as well. I don’t often have burgers, but the melting cheese makes this a must, as long as I can get my mouth round it!

I really don’t eat burgers that much but this was fun to try – thank you for commenting, it’s a fun and unique way to make one for sure!

I’m definitely on board with that burger, John! Just about to finish cooking a home-made minced beef and onion pie that Julie made last week. We are having it with cauliflower cheese and tiny new potatoes the size of marbles.
Best wishes, Pete.
