A “Chop Suey Saga!” The Man Behind Frozen Meals! Great Food Books Are Here!

Ready For A “Chop Suey Saga?”

Well, who isn’t?

My friend Brenton shared a great book about the history of the world through five beverages and it made me want to share some of my favorite books about food, like this one that looks at the origin of the fortune cookie!

It’s much more than food as that image attests – a fascinating book and you can see more of it here:

Some of my favorite food books mix memoir with recipes – and there was one that towered above them all:

Yes, Julia Child could shake a Turkey with the best of them – and her life story is a riveting read!

I also enjoyed this memoir about being a Chef for a very rich family – crusing the Mediterranean while cooking!

Here’s a deep dive into the memoir as well as the recipe for “fish in crazy water!”

Who Needs A Hot Meal In A Thin Pan?

Sixty+ years ago, two great American traditions were changed forever: watching TV and eating dinner. Thanks to the invention of the “TV dinner”, Americans could step away from the stove and leave the home cooking to someone else!

Let’s go back to a time when all of your food was served on one nice aluminum tray!

Yes, delicious meatloaf, green beans, tater tots AND a chocolate brownie could be served in a beautiful tin plate – so you could settle down and enjoy a nice night of TV – America never looked back!

frozen TV dinner

As time went on, Swanson knew they had to expand your culinary horizons, leading to “TV dinner” trips around the world!

Now, why am I telling you all this? Because there is a great book all about the man who led us to this “frozen food on a tin platter place”!

Birdseye: The Adventures of a Curious Man

Break out the TV dinners! From the author who gave us “Cod”, “Salt”, and other informative bestsellers, it’s the first biography of Clarence Birdseye, the eccentric genius inventor whose fast-freezing process revolutionized the food industry and American agriculture.

  1. Hi John, I have only read about TV dinners (Matilda by Roald Dahl mentioned them a lot). What an interesting idea. I can see why it took off.

  2. This post makes me cheer for those who have a vision and ‘go for it’. Clarence Birdseye did (left brain), and Julia Child did (right brain).
