Meet The Majestic South African Cape Buffalo!
For anyone who has been on an African safari, you know that every day has a new magical discovery in store…and you also learn just how majestic – and dangerous – some of the animals are!

A herd of wild Cape buffalo are an amazing sight – as long as you approach them safely and give the animals their space…when you head out in your safari jeep, the expert guides know when to track the animals – and when to let the animals find you….here’s a video of our Jeep cruising across Singita’s Sabi Sand preserve before stopping – as a large herd of Cape buffalo encounter us:
Cape Buffalo Are Also Known As “Black Death!”
Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer caffer) are known for their immense power and unpredictable temperament, and are referred to by hunters and guides as the “Black Death.”
Our expert guides Louis and George knew it was time to stop and let them pass…look at how many there were and how close they got to us:
They Have “Vengeful Memory”:
Cape Buffaloes are renowned for their exceptional memories. They are known to recognize individual human hunters or specific lion prides that attacked them or their calves years prior, sometimes actively tracking them down for revenge.

They weigh as much as 2,000 pounds and can run up to 40 miles per hour, so don’t get them angry!
Here’s more of the herd as they amble by, without a care in the world:
We waited for about twenty minutes while they grazed around us before our guides felt comfortable back away – here’s how we left them:

This was just one of the incredible encounters we had at Singita Boulders in South Africa…we also watched our spirit animal grazing in front of us:
Yes, they are called a “tower” of Giraffes for good reason!
Read more about them here:
And of course, some of the fastest animals in Africa roam in packs and scavenge…here we are chasing a pack of wild dogs in Botswana!
That chase gave us a “safari massage” – click here to find out why!
Our 19 day safari was the greatest adventure of our lives so far, and we loved that the animals were in charge of everything – so imagine when we saw these two young Lion cubs waiting patiently for their Mom to wander through our safari camp looking for food!

We embraced the fact that the animals run the place – and it’s good for the people who live in the area as well. See why safari tourism is so good for the animals and the people of Africa as well:
With so much excitement every day on safari, we were always hungry – and the “safari food” was incredible!

See how we ended every day by a bonfire – and you will get a closeup look at my “safari slider” burger here!
So much food fun! I already shared a story about how they greeted us at Singita Boulders in South Africa on our first night, plus a look at the festive food welcome we got when we arrived…see it here!
