Who Loves Plastic Food? I Do! Here’s A Wild Plastic Food Exhibition!

Shopping For Plastic Food In Tokyo!

Here’s my wife Alex and son Jeff as we shopped for plastic food a few years ago – I bought this Cheeseburger Paper Weight!

Why am I telling you this??

Because there’s an exhibit in Tokyo that celebrates the art of plastic food! As reported in the great website “SoraNews24.com”:

One of the great things about dining out in Japan is the chance to see what you’re eating before it’s served to you, in the form of plastic food samples often displayed at the front of the restaurant.

Look at this amazing slab of Tuna and some sushi as well! Restaurants in Japan use plastic food to give you an idea of what they serve, especially because so many in Tokyo are in tall buildings!

This way you don’t take the elevator all the way up to find out it’s not what you are hungry for!

SoraNews24 Reporter Oona McGee reports:

“The company that first introduced Japan to the wonders of the plastic food sample is Iwasaki, and they’re currently the country’s largest producer of the samples. They first began making them in 1932, and now, to celebrate their 90th anniversary, Iwasaki is holding a special exhibition featuring 60 of their most impressive and creative designs.”

Called the Oishisa Art Exhibition 2022 in Tokyo Solamachi, the exhibition is celebrating this great culinary art form – including some wildly entertaining works of art using a cucumber:

Who loves a giant Zucchini that looks like a snake?

I have a long history with plastic food:

This is my latest iPhone cover – bacon and egg, thanks to the world famous Kappabashi street in Tokyo!

Find out why these streets are lined with stores that sell plastic foo – just click here for my tour!

This district is fascinating, and one of the best things I ever bought was this:

Yes, I own a “plastic triple cheeseburger!”

If you want to know why this all exists, I give away all of the secrets in my story here:

By the way, I’m not the only one who loves this stuff:

That’s right, kids wear this plastic food on their heads!

  1. 90 years is a big deal! They certainly deserve recognition and an exhibition. I love your phone cover, John.

  2. I really like how much you adore that plastic food, and put it to good use as phone covers and paperweights. It’s simply good fun!
    Best wishes, Pete.

  3. A Zucchini snake is a great idea, John. I made a giant spider out of a massive Easter egg a few years ago. I used ropes of licorice for its legs and Smarties for its eyes. I love food art.

  4. When I was in Japan, some 40 years ago, I was mesmerised by the plastic food display. It was such a different concept at the time!
