Someone’s Got “Titanic” In Their Sights!
My friend on Facebook shared this wild picture, showcasing the difference between the legendary Titanic and modern day mega cruisers!
It led me to a story online about how the mega-cruise ship has gotten so big in the past 100 years!
The Titanic was the largest and most complex cruise ship when it set sail in 1912 – but that was a long time ago!
The article asked a simple question:
Are Modern Cruise Ships Bigger Than The Titanic?
Boy, are they ever!
Modern cruise ships are, on average, 20% longer than the Titanic and twice as high. The average Royal Caribbean cruise ship is 325 meters long, 14 decks high and has a gross tonnage of 133,000. In comparison, the Titanic was only 269 meters long, 9 decks high, and had a gross tonnage of 46,000.
As you can see, the modern mega-cruiser is massive in height, weight and length when compared to the iconic Titanic!
I found these graphs fascinating, as they really show what a century of sea travel has led to – oh, and I got to see it in persona as well – this is a photo I took from a rooftop bar on the legendary Venice Canal:
Yes, the famous St. Marks Cathedral is dwarfed by the size of this mega-cruiser steaming into Venice…so see such iconic sites as the “Bridge Of Sighs”:
I took this shot as the sun was setting…magical, right?
Well here’s what it looked like as we approached it, due to those thousands and thousand and thousands of people who got off that mega cruiser to see it as well:

I haven’t taken a cruise, but I did read a fascinating series of books by someone who worked on them!

I have never been attracted to ocean cruises, and definitely not on a ship that looks like a floating skyscraper. One of the reasons I have never visited Venice is exactly because of such ships disgorging thousands of tourists to clog up everything worth seeing.
Best wishes, Pete.

Yes Pete, it makes it challenging to explore, as the city is so small and narrow anyway…I like wide open spaces, perhaps that is one reason we have embraced hiking in America’s wild Wild West – lots of room – I read that 80% of the population lives EAST of the Mississippi River in the US!

This is fascinating! I’ll pass on a mega cruiser voyage. Too big! That bridge of sighs is a wonder to behold.

Hi John, I am not a fan of cruise ships. They are doing a lot of damage to our most famous cities.

Wow! Those giant ships scare me! I prefer a more medium-sized cruise ship!

They are SO massive, and in Venice they disgorge thousands of people who swamp the city and don’t leave anything behind but garbage sadly…

It is sad. There’s no reason for them to be that big; other than more money for the cruise lines.

Sadly, it’s a financial issue to be sure…but they can overwhelm their destination….

Brings up the question, again, of if bigger is always better. As of this year, French Polynesia has banned the largest cruise ships from docking, and some places have imposed stricter docking restrictions. Mega-cruise ships may also shock in their limited itineraries 🙃

I agree that “bigger is NOT better”…and there are so many stories of the destructive damage done to the ecology and more….thanks for commenting, always great to hear from you!

Those new cruise ships are huge…and scary. They look so top heavy. Didn’t anyone ever see THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE…or any of the remakes? EEK!!

HA! I shared that movie as one of the great 70’s disaster films – and it had the greatest tagline: “HELL. UPSIDE DOWN.”
