Time To Travel To Excess!
Doesn’t this look like fun? Well it is! But there is so much more going on underneath the deck, and I just finished a “Quadrilogy” of memoirs that tears the lid off cruising!
Brian David Bruns worked on a cruise ship. He saw things you wouldn’t believe. And he wrote about it all.
Wednesday’s Bookmobile not only takes you below deck to see what life on a cruise ship is REALLY LIKE, but also takes us around the world for a series of four terrifically entertaining adventures!
It all began here:
“Cruise Confidential: A Hit Below the Waterline: Where the Crew Lives, Eats, Wars, and Parties. One Crazy Year Working on Cruise Ships” by Brian David Bruns
Bruns hit the jackpot with his “tell all”, inside look at life on a cruise ship. He’s a great Writer, and there was a LOT to write about!
Before you go on your next (or your first) cruise, read what Amazon has to say about “Cruise Confidential”:
Brian David Bruns spills the dirt — or in this case, the dirty water — on those romantic, fun-filled vacations at sea. His hilarious chronicle of the year he spent working for Carnival Cruise Lines takes readers down into the areas where the crew works and lives, leaving readers gasping with laughter as they’re assaulted nonstop with events that range from the absurd to the utterly bizarre.
This book is terrific – shocking, hilarious, and shocking again! Bruns has a knack for telling a tale, and tell tales he does!
Stewards fighting over food. Cutlery allowances and other nonsensical rules. What the crew calls those onboard (no, it’s not “passengers”). And of course, the sex.
As Amazon says: “an abundance of ready, willing, and able bodies eager for action on a vessel replete with nooks and crannies leads to love in some mighty strange, and seemingly impossible, places.”
This is one entertaining look at life on a cruise ship, where everything and anything goes in pursuit of a good time!
“Cruise Confidential” was such a big hit that Bruns has written three sequels!
That’s right, Bruns has turned his writing into a cottage industry – each sequel as funny and entertaining as the other!
“Ship for Brains: Cruise Confidential Book 2” continues the story, as Bruns goes from being a ship waiter, working 7 days a week, 16 hours a day, to becoming an Art Auctioneer.
Did you know the mega-cruise ships had fine art for sale? Well, Bruns shows you how and why they do it, and it’s extremely lucrative and hilariously entertaining as well!
The third book in the series, “Unsinkable Mister Brown”, tells the fascinating story of Brian’s love affair with Bianca, a cruise ship waitress who turns his life upside down.
This book documents their love affair, separated by thousands of miles of ocean, and also gives intimate detail about life in Eastern Europe, as she takes him to her home town in Romania.
In this book, you see why so many people flock to cruise ship work, and why there are so few Americans who do so…it’s a love story, a battle to overcome the odds and end up together, and a great travel adventure as well.
This “High Seas Drifter” Finally Reaches Home Port!
As the final book states, it’s the “shocking conclusion” to Brian’s life on the high seas and his relationship with Bianca…and as dramatic as his story is, these books are also incredible travel adventures, a Bruns gives lots of great insight and historical information from his incredible ports of call:
From the beach of Cannes France to Morocco, Spain, Africa, Ibiza and beyond, this last book combines a dramatic storyline with some incredible travel adventures as well…
It looks like Bruns continues to travel the high seas, this time to share his stories as a special guest on cruise ships…based on his books, I’d love to spend some time with him onboard a big ship!

These sound like a hoot! As someone who took 250 crazy wild women on a cruise during a stint in the travel industry and who catered her way through all sorts of line circumstances, I can’t wait to read these!

You were in charge of a group of 250? Wow, you should write your own book! He’s a funny, self-deprecating Writer who has fun inside stories without being too sensationalistic…just a fascinating series of books about life on the water! Thanks for commenting!

This sounds fascinating, John. I am interested in reading about cruises. I am sure the crew see the best and worst of people.

Robbie, the books are funny and insightful and very well written…nothing offensive, just an honest look at life on a cruise ship – from the ONLY American working onboard! They hire Central Americans, Filipinos and Indian workers mostly – the working conditions are below what they feel Americans will do – that’s part of the first book – just how hard it was for him to get hired!

Very interesting. A school mate of mine’s son is now a captain of one of these passenger liners. He had to learn everything from scrubbing the decks upwards. Very interesting.
