Bite Into This McMillion$ “Deep-Fried Fraud!” My “Cult Movie Monday” Has The Terrific Story Of $$$ And Big Macs!

Hungry For A Great Docu-Series?

Well, get ready to bite down on this! HBO has a “truth is stranger than fiction” story for you – how a scam artist and a mobster managed to cheat McDonald’s out of millions of dollars by infiltrating their million-dollar “McDonald’s Monopoly” game!

First, check out the trailer:

This is one of the best documentaries I’ve seen – beautiful shot with great recreations and all new interviews from everyone involved!

Here’s how HBO describes this multi-part documentary:

A six-part documentary series from Executive Producer Mark Wahlberg, McMillion$ chronicles the stranger-than-fiction true story of how $24 million-dollars was stolen from the McDonald’s Monopoly game of the 1990s, the mystery mastermind behind the scam and the intrepid FBI agents on his trail.

Here’s more on how it all went down:

For over a decade, McDonald’s fast-food empire awarded prizes in its Monopoly promotional game tie-in, unaware that the biggest winning tickets were being stolen and sold to undeserving winners through a complex web of family and friends who became co-conspirators.

Folks, this is as twisted as any detective thriller you will read! They go on to say:

An anonymous tip to the FBI in 2001 triggers a far-reaching chain of events that will come to include dogged and unorthodox investigative work, undercover sting operations and dirty dealings by shifty ex-cons with ties to the mafia.

Yes, this is McDonalds packaging on an evidence board at the FBI! And it gets even better:

The series unravels the twisted threads of the fast-food fraud through exclusive firsthand accounts and archival footage featuring the FBI agents who brought down the gaming scam, McDonald’s corporate executives who were themselves defrauded, the lawyers who tried the case and the culprits and prizewinners who profited from the complicated scheme, as well as individuals who were often unwittingly duped into being a part of the ruse.

We were riveted to the entire series – again, one of the best I’ve seen!

HBO has a webpage devoted to the story with lots of additional information – you can see it here:

And if this makes you hungry for great stories about scam artists, have you seen this?

“Sour Grapes” is the terrific documentary about a Wine Connoisseur who manages to scam collectors out of millions – one sip at a time!

  3. Terrific post, and I couldn’t agree more! I absolutely loved this series from start to finish. It had a ton of twists and turns, and we couldn’t get into the next episode fast enough. After we finished, we wished for more. I’ve gotta say, I really wasn’t expecting a dip into the mob. My favorite moment was the fax mix-up to the newspaper; so crazy. Thank you for sharing!

  4. That was fun to watch, although it could have used a bit of editing. A lot, in fact. Should have been no more than 3 episodes. I enjoyed the FBI agents, especially Agent Mathews. And that one guy, I can’t think of his name, spent a lot of time in prison, was one of the goes between in Florida, what a character. Way too much time spent on the Columbo family, especially Robin. You did a nice recap, John. It was fascinating to see the workings of the cast.

  5. Wow, there are as many really clever criminals as they are good guys, aren’t there John. I always thought that but everyday it becomes more apparent.

  6. That was a clever scam, it has to be said. ‘Ordinary’ winners certainly didn’t attract much attention at first. But like everyone, they got greedy.
    Best wishes, Pete.
