I Ate “Salted Egg Fish Skin!” What The Friday!?!?!?!?!? Here’s My Taste Test!

Have I Got A Snack For You!

Who wants to bite down on this incredible “Salted Egg Fish Skin?”

I have a whole bowl full and I’m willing to share!

This is “What The Friday” was made for…when I was in San Francisco recently, my friends took Alex and I to Chinatown and into a really incredible shop, which sold a lot of unique items – so I bought a bunch of stuff and of course we had to get a picture in the street:

While shopping, I came across this bag of “Salted Egg Fish Skin” and I just had to try it – so here’s my taste test!

First, let’s discuss the product itself: as the bag itself says in the upper right corner, this is “SUPER addictive”…and the 2.47 oz bag cost me $9.95.

As the back of the package explains, the “Fragrance Salted Egg Fish Skin” is baked at their own factory, and I am warned again that they are “extremely addictive, beware.”

The entire package is 450 calories, and the ingredients are crispy fish skin made with wheat flour, palm oil, pepper salt, and salted egg yolk made with dried curry leaves, sugar, salt and black pepper.

Here’s how they look in a bowl, but I always love to get a shot of a product in its natural environment, so I tore open a bag and peered inside:

My son Jeff was with me, and he eagerly volunteered to taste one first – after giving it a “smell”:

I am very proud of the fact that my son is an adventurous eater, willing to try anything, and he quickly bite into one, eliciting a loud crispy snap!

He immediately expressed delight, saying it was as good as he hoped it would be!

Did I believe him? It was my turn to find out!

They are slightly greasy to the touch, and there is a lot of seasoning on it – and I did smell the bag and it’s no unpleasant – it just won’t make you rush forward excitedly if you know what I mean and I think you do…

OK, enough pondering, time to bite down on one! I smelled it briefly and then bit in – and yes, it’s a crispy bite to be sure:

They were indeed salty, but not overly so, and the hint of egg yolk was there as well. the fish skin snaps like a potato chip, but it is, without a doubt, fish skin – but the combination of flavors was actually interesting!

Would I have them again? Sure!

Anytime soon? No need!

Of course, unique flavors like this are nothing new – I shared some of China’s most unusual potato chip flavors before – have your tried these “Hot And Sour Fish Soup” potato chips?

It’s just one of the wacky flavors I’ve discovered – see them all by clicking on my story here:

  1. Fish skin… Were scales involved?

  2. I would most definitely try these! I’ve been to Vietnam twice and surprised myself at the foods I tried at least once, although I’m pretty adventurous when it comes to food so I think that may not be saying much… 😅 Kudos to you for experiencing something new!

  3. This is actually a snack I would try John. It is a good use of fish skin.

  4. Fish skin must be one of the origins of “waste not, want not” … I’ll stick with “want not” 😉

  6. I would try 1..probably no more as I don’t eat snacks like that…There are lots of fishy snacks like that here which all the kids eat and they are very popular as are the insects…Interesting as always 🙂

  8. You are very brave. Not sure if they appeal to me. We just laughed at how you ate one and then sealed the bag. If I really like something I can’t stop eating them till they are gone.

Interesting concept though for a crisp. I guess when we eat fish, we eat skin.. so this is just the skin without the fish. I wonder what happened to the after removing the skin. Maybe they became fish fingers….
    Another interesting review!

  9. I would try 1. ) I’m a bit squeamish about odd meat products and raw onions, but and at least try most everything else in the world 🌎

  10. I’ll be honest, John, not a chance I’d eat this 😆. I did look at fried squid in Korea though 😉

  11. Loved your expression in the video, John. 🙂
I would try it, but maybe not eat a whole bag!
Not long ago, someone pitched something similar on ‘Dragon’s Den’ here, using salmon skins.
Although a couple of investors liked the product, he didn’t get the money he asked for.

    Best wishes, Pete.
