See This Box? It’s Going To Scan Your Entire Grocery Cart At Once! “What The Friday” Goes Into The Future!
Get ready for the wildest new innovation that will change how you shop forever!
This “What The Friday” segment takes you to the grocery store of the future, where checkout lines are a thing of the past!
A new Artificial Intelligence self-checkout system is being tested in Tokyo, and Mr Sato from SoraNews24 visited it at a Seikatsu Saika convenience store in Tokyo!
It’s simple: just put ALL of your items into the scanner and it will give you a grand total to pay automatically! No scanning individual items, no waiting for a cashier – you just set the stuff down and it tells you what you owe!
Nice job by Reporter Oona McGee – see the entire story here, with Mr. Sato documenting the whole process and remarking on just how easy it was:

I can’t until this checkout line of the future hits the USA!
And when I check out, my grocery cart is going to be full of this:
We’re Gonna Have A “Spam Bake!”
Do I wish I lived in the 60’s? Probably not, but I sure do wish I had been around when classic dishes like this were being spread out on party tables nationwide!
These classic “retro recipes” are hilarious to see, and you can see more of them right here:

See you in the checkout line!

We have hand-held scanners here already, as well as the self-service checkout option. But I like to pile all my stuff on the conveyor belt, and have a chat to the checkout lady as I pack it away. It not only keeps her job, but also provides me (and others) with a brief moment of human interaction. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

Thanks for these , John. Adding peaches to SPAM could only be an improvement, although it could well be a waste of peaches. Masterchef starts back again tonight in Australia and I only wish I could eat what’s being prepared instead of merely watching through the screen.
Best wishes,
Rowena

Automation has always meant a loss of jobs and that, unfortunately, is a fact of life…Let’s hope other jobs will be created…I will stick to the local markets as long as I can and I can’t see them going anywhere soon here 🙂

I have pointed out that in the US there are “self service” checkout lines now everywhere, this is just a faster version but I agree that “shop local” is vital!

When I go shopping, there’s usually a lot in the cart. That scanner better be big. 😉

Some people have mentioned the loss of cashier jobs but as you probably see, the “self service” scanner is everywhere now…i think it will be interesting to see if this technology makes its way here soon…

Hmmm, loss of jobs – I think I’ll stand in line….which, by the way, you’ll still have to do.

I understand the job issue, but where i live every grocery store already has “self service” checkouts so this is in the same vein – even if we can have this work with a cashier, who just puts it on a single tray, that would be fine with me…

Reminds me of the newer machines in my local library. You put the books in the gap, all at once rather than one by one, and they’re automatically read by the computer (magic!) and the titles pop up on the screen to confirm you want them all taken as out a loan. I do like the idea of bypassing all the queues and forgoing the often problematic self-checkout part in supermarkets.x

Someone bemoaned the loss of cashier jobs but with so many self-checkout systems in place now as it is i think that issue is already underway

Unfortunately it means people will lose their jobs!

Colline, I think that may be the case already with all of the self-service checkouts we have in grocery stores now, you scan all your own stuff and one person monitors a dozen self-serve checkouts…this just makes that faster!
