A Burger-Flipping Robot!
Honestly, not sure how I feel about this: a restaurant in Pasadena California has introduced a “burger-flipping” Robot!
Meet “Flippy!”
Yes, that’s the name for this hamburger-making Robot. I found this story on Newswer, who reports:
“Fast-food chain CaliBurger is using a robot called Flippy at its Pasadena, Calif., location, KTLA reports. A human employee loads up the grill with raw burger patties, and Flippy uses thermal imaging, 3D and camera vision to detect the temperature and size of the patty as well as the temperature of the grill surface in order to know when to flip the burger and when to remove it from the grill. It also uses artificial intelligence as it cooks burgers to learn how to do it even better. A human employee adds cheese and toppings. A press release calls Flippy, which can also clean spatulas and uses separate spatulas for raw versus cooked meat, “the world’s first autonomous robotic kitchen assistant.”
KTLA went to the restaurant and spoke to the CEO of the company:
“The key to success in the restaurant industry is consistency. So anytime you go to a CaliBurger anywhere you know that the patty will be cooked exactly the same,” says the CEO of Cali Group, the chain’s parent company. The CEO of Miso Robotics, which developed Flippy and says the minimum cost of the robot is $60,000, says it’s “not about replacing jobs” but about helping kitchen employees. “The kitchen of the future will always have people in it, but we see that kitchen as having people and robots,” he says. Adds the Cali Burger CEO, “It’s not a fun job—it’s hot, it’s greasy, it’s dirty.” He tells USA Today the restaurant sees high turnover in the position for that reason. Flippy, says the Miso CEO, is simply a helpful “third hand” that doesn’t mind doing that job. Flippy can grill 150 burgers per hour, NPR reports.
USA Today reports that due to the amount of press received, “Flippy” won’t be operational until next week, to let the ruckus die dwn..here is that story:
I have to say this concerns me a bit. Fast food jobs are one of the only ways that lower-income kids can get employment, and if a Robot begins to do the cooking, what is left?
We’ll see how this plays out, but the fact is, there have been robots in the kitchen in China for years!
Yes, there have been ramen-making Robots for years! Here is a look at that story:

Let me know what you think of this next level of fast food technology! Is it a good idea to use robotics to take away entry-level jobs?

Oh, how I remember how sweaty and slimy I felt when I flipped burgers during my high school years. As you hinted, I’d hate for jobs to be taken away from humans who need to work. The technology is impressive.

This is really cool but it also freaks me out so much. I think that a human is always better for something like this, so agree with what you said that it’s an extra job for someone too!

Totally agree, it’s so important for young people to work and learn how to hold a job and excel – instead of watching a Robot do it! Thanks for your comment!

Exactly, so important to try a few jobs and build yourself up! Scary how robots/technology is taking over nowadays

I’d prefer a human operator but certainly more and more things are getting automated!

Yes, the world is becoming more and more automated for sure!

“Flippy” looks cute. But still, it would be better with a human being making those burgers. Otherwise, people will lose jobs.

That’s my concern, which I mention in the story as well: these entry-level jobs would go to people who need to enter the workforce, where would they go otherwise?

Not only the low income kids out of work, but also the ex-prisoners too. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

Pete, you are right, a place to teach people how to hold a job and contribute to society – we lose those options and what is left?

I did read that many ex-prisoners get a fresh start in burger bars. Many go on to do well, and buy franchises. But if they have robots, they won’t need staff.

Hmmm… I think I’d rather have a genuine human being – even of the teenage variety – tending to the burgers!

Agree, if only because it’s a job for someone getting started in the workforce!
