The “Bob’s Big Boy” Tribute To David Lynch…
Cinephiles around the world were stunned when the iconic Director David Lynch died last week…as you can see from my friend Alison Martino’s “VINTAGE LOS ANGELES” Instagram post – note: subscribe for great stories and history of Hollywood! Alison posts about a unique tribute that has sprung up for Lynch at what would seem to be an unlikely spot:

Welcome To Bob’s Big Boy In Burbank California!
This 70-foot sign welcomes you to Burbank’s most iconic landmark – the classic Bob’s Big Boy – an iconic fixture since 1949 – and where Lynch would go alsmot every day for coffee and milk shakes!

It’s a very touching tribute to the Director from fans who know this iconic destination well:

For the uninitiated, what exactly is Bob’s Big Boy? Well, here is your answer:

If you want a true Hollywood experience, cruise the San Fernando Valley, just north of Hollywood, where there are several iconic locations you come across, including this one:

This classic sign welcomes you to a great vintage diner, which serves up a “big boy” burger! As their website states:
“Bob’s Big Boy, Burbank is a magnificent example of the emerging California coffee shop style that exploded in Los Angeles in the 1950’s. Built in 1949, the structure is dramatically related to World Fair pavilions of the pre-war period by its long, low, horizontal roof line and wide canopies.”
Indeed!

This diner, with the vintage sign and of course iconic statue, was honored in 1993, receiving the designation as a “STATE POINT OF HISTORICAL INTEREST” by the state of California.

Sure, like everything in Hollywood, it sports a great look, but as they say, it may look good, but how does it taste?

Biting Into A Bob’s Big Boy…
I ate at Bob’s on several occasions and filed a review – in a nutshell: I am the first to admit that a burger, when done right, should taste like a burger – unless there is special seasoning, I expect the meat to taste like good ground beef, and this does – and not overcooked! The toppings should be balanced, so you can taste each one – and I got that as well…the secret sauce was somewhat of a thousand island taste, but very subtle – in fact, what I really enjoyed about this burger was the fact that I could taste all of the elements without anything overpowering the taste of meat!

Bob’s serves up a great burger, and as David Lynch noted, a great cup of coffee as well…here is more from inside the restaurant – as well as a look at their iconic exotic car showplace as well:
So, to honor David Lynch and his love of Bob’s Big Boy, I am going to make a Big Boy Burger at home tonight and watch a David Lynch film…so many classics to choose from:

There’s the offbeat brilliance of “Mulholland Drive” and Lynch’s take on Hollywood…or perhaps the rot that lies underneath the surface of a small town:

“Blue Velvet” is mesmerizing…but of course, so is the entire “Twin Peaks” series, or his take on “Dune”, or “The Elephant Man” or his recent moody masterpiece “Inland Empire”…but I want to get “in your face” a bit, so that means we need some Nicolas Cage!

I love the chaotic energy of “Wild At Heart!” In this 1990 film, Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern play young lovers Sailor and Lula, who are on the run from a variety of offbeat hitmen and women that Lula’s mom has hired to kill Sailor!
Here is the trailer:
An incredible cast includes Crispin Glover, Diane Ladd, Willem Dafoe, Isabella Rossellini and Harry Dean Stanton – it’s my “dinner and a movie” choice tonight!
I have shared many other “dinner and a movie” nights as well, including one of my favorites: when Vincent Price was cooking!

Yes, the master of horror cooked up a deliciously wicked film called “Theater Of Blood” – with the brilliant Actress Diana Ring, who is in disguise next to him!
See what I cooked up here:
Perhaps my favorite “Dinner And A Movie” recipe is this one: when Clemenza teaches Michael Corleone how to feed an army of Mobsters:

That’s right, here is the actual recipe for Clemenza’s Meatballs!
See it here:
I not only love the film, but I got to see some of the places where “The Godfather” was filmed in Sicily!

Yes, I sat in the seat where Michael Corleone told Appolonia’s father that men would pay a lot of money to know he was there!
See it all here:

I share your choice of the dinner and movie, John. David Lynch is a great loss to the film industry, as well as to us, his fans.

Are you saying Burbank was not in the fires?

NO, the fires were AltaDena/Pasadena, about 5 miles east. Luckily Burbank was spared…

Lots of Twitter users were posing by the statue as a tribute to David. I really like his films, and the TV series Twin Peaks. But my real favourite of his is still ‘The Straight Story’. That film really melts my heart.
Best wishes, Pete.

Yes Pete! And it was, by far, his most straightforward storytelling effort and that is no criticism.
