One Icon Sings Another!
Music fans, rejoice! Dolly Parton has performed one of Tom Petty’s most beautiful songs, and before I reveal the music video, here’s why you are going to want to hear it!
| The Tom Petty Estate is thrilled to officially announce Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty. We are so grateful to the incredible artists who contributed to this album, including Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench. Thank you also to the loving curators GRAMMY® Award-winning producer George Drakoulias, Randall Poster and Scott Borchetta. |
| Petty Country is out June 21 via our partners Big Machine Label Group. |
Dolly Parton’s reimagined version of “Southern Accents,” a Petty classic and considered by Petty to be one of the best songs he ever wrote, is out today accompanied by a new music video directed by Trey Fanjoy. The video features Parton as well as poignant home videos and professional footage of Petty throughout his life. |
| “I was fortunate enough to get to know Tom over the years. He’s such an iconic artist and important songwriter. I’m so honored to be a part of this special album and to be able to share my version of one of Tom’s best songs, ‘Southern Accents’.” – Dolly Parton |
Here now is the absolutely gorgeous rendition by Parton – enjoy!
Since Petty’s untimely death, his estate has worked to bring out new material of songs the Artist wrote and recorded, but hadn’t released, like this:
“Wildflowers” was his masterwork in the 90’s, but 10 songs were left off – until now…see the music video for “Leave Virginia Alone” here:
Petty’s tragic death has left a great hole in rock music…but even more than his solo music and the music with The Heartbreakers, he was also part of one of the greatest super groups ever!
“The Traveling Wilburys” were Petty, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison!
They had so much great music – you can see some of their best music videos here:

I really, really miss tom petty, loved everything he ever did and he was such a gift to the music world. I also really love dolly, for the great human being that she is, so kind and giving to so many, and she is the perfect person to sing his song, he would have been so happy to hear it sung with her beautiful voice

Dolly’s recent Rockstar album probably got her the gig for this one – it’s remarkable!
For me that is one of Tom’s best albums, from the amazing legacy he left us.
