“No Soup For You!”
Yes, that was the sharp rebuke from the character known as “The Soup Nazi” on the iconic TV series “Seinfeld.”
Now that I am in New York, I have been checking out some of the iconic locations for film and TV, and of course, that meant checking out the place where “The Soup Nazi” ruled the kitchen.
It is one of the most famous episodes of all, and it made me want to follow “Newman” as he coveted his soup – here is his reaction to being served:
You see, this Chef is always on edge, so you must order exactly the right way and not waste this time, or “no soup for you!”
There is a hilarious moment when Elaine Benes sparks his fury, and here is the first time we meet this volatile Chef – as Jerry and George attempt to make a purchase…check out this clip:
As you saw, it did NOT go well for George, who didn’t get soup that day!
Why am I telling you all this? Because I visited the real “Soup Kitchen” that inspired the show! Let’s head to 55th and 8th Ave on New York’s west side…
As you can see, it’s a small kitchen, but they cook up 8-10 different soups every single day, so I had to get me some:
I went to The Soup Kitchen multiple times, and on one visit the legendary Jambalaya was being served so I bought some…it was packed with spicy andouille sausage, shrimp, rice and red and green bell pepper…it was delicious!
You can click on my story at “Bite! Eat! Repeat!” to see video of my Jambalaya taste test, plus reviews of the clam chowder and lobster bisque as well!
For those who love the show “Seinfeld” as much as I do, Jason Alexander was terrific as George Costanza – but did you know that Alexander is quite the singer and dancer as well?
Have you seen his musical ad for McDonalds?

We saw Alexander in a musical in Hollywood once and he is really good!
I have explored a number of unique restaurants in New York, including one that served a $29 hot dog:
Was Mischa’s hot dog worth that price?
See my review here:
Sadly, the restaurant recently closed, but if you are in the big apple and want a terrific hot dog, try these:
Gray’s Papaya sits at 72nd and Broadway, and serves up their “recession special”: two hot dogs and a papaya drinks for $6.50! Do they deliver the goods for such a great price?
Here is my review!
Along with Gray’s Papaya, there’s another iconic slice of food in New York:
A slice of New York pizza is a rite of passage in the big apple…click here to see the story of one of the city;’s most famous pizza joints!
I share all of these recipes on my food website “Bite! Eat! Repeat!” – it’s your site for all things food – if you like what you see, please click on my link and follow this blog as well!
Let me know if you enjoyed my look at “The Soup Kitchen”!
If you like the story, share it with friends on social media! Thanks!

I’m going to have to admit that I have never watched Seinfeld, not one episode … although, as a testament to its pop culture status, I actually have heard the “no soup for you” phrase before. How fun to go to the actual place and see it for yourself!

I can say the same thing about “Friends” – and yes, I went to the fountain in Central Park where apparently the entire cast jumps up in the air in the show’s opening credits, and so now literally every single person who visits gets a photo doing the same thing! Thanks for the comment always great to hear from you!

Seinfeld is my all-time favorite sitcom, and The Soup Nazi episode was hilarious. Elaine is so funny when she comes in all cocky and then gets shamed. I’ve only been to New York once, but The Soup Kitchen will definitely be a must stop when I make it back.

The bit with Elaine is hilarious and I don’t want to give it away to anyone who STILL hasn’t seen it, but the story threads masterfully pay off with her hilarious final line to him!

I’ve been to gray’s and really enjoyed it, and as for the soup nazi locale, I’m sure the show brought it a level of fame that they never imagined

Cool post. I think that’s a neat thing about NYC seeing so many sites that are featured in pop culture and tv shows. I remember visiting in my 20s and being amazed by Central Park, less by its history and more by its appearance in so many tv shows and movies over the years. Silly I know!

Not at all! I’ve eaten at Katz’s Deli where they filmed “When Harry Met Sally” and just two days ago I took a picture of some cherry blossoms, which are at the “Friends” fountain – and everyone does a “jumping in the air” photo! Thanks for the comment, always great hearing from you!

I have never seen an episode of that TV show, but the sign intrigued me. “All soups come with Bread Fruit and Chocolate”. What’s that about? 😀
Best wishes, Pete.

I show it in my story. A slice of fruit, a piece of fruit and a small chocolate – to make it a complete meal! And the soups are really good as well!

Pete, I only included it in the story on the food blog and linked to it on my regular one…sorry for the misdirection!
