Phil Is Back – And He’s Hungry!
I love “food and travel” shows, and this one is the best! And the best news? Phil is back!
Phil Rosenthal loves food – and it’s clear in every episode of his terrific Netflix series “Somebody Feed Phil!”
Rosenthal was Creator and EP of the classic TV comedy “Everybody Loves Raymond”, and he took his passion for food and turned it into a wildly entertaining TV series!
This is the perfect summation – from a news article promoting the return:
“Season 7 of Phil Rosenthal’s hit show “Somebody Feed Phil” is headed towards Netflix, which means there’s never been a better time to explore facts about the series even die-hard fans might not know. All six seasons of the show are currently available to stream, and each is packed with stunning locations, moving moments, and delicious food. But “Somebody Feed Phil” is about more than just tasty food and dream destinations. It’s rooted in Phil’s incredible enthusiasm for food, travel, and the people he meets. These are the things that ensure the show is a hit with fans. We challenge you to not get swept up in Phil’s childlike wonder at the amazing towns, cities, and countries he visits — and the mouth-watering dishes he samples.”
Perfectly stated!
For the past 6 seasons, all still available to watch, Phil heads to a city and explores their culture and history through their food – and when my wife Alex and I travelled to Lisbon, we re-traced all of Phils’ steps!
Here is some fun trivia about the show – from a terrific article online:
Phil revealed in an interview with Bustle that if he eats something he doesn’t like, it doesn’t make it into the final cut of the show. This makes watching “Somebody Feed Phil” all the most affecting — you can take it in with the confidence of knowing you’re seeing someone have a genuinely great time.
Phil confessed he’ll never be the kind of host to eat an eyeball. “Certain intestines, certain guts … I’m never gonna be that guy,” he remarked.
Ardent fans are already well-acquainted with this fact. Who can forget Episode 1 of Season 5, when Phil visits Oaxaca? He turns down a crispy-looking iguana-based dish and a bowl of beetles — though he does get down some worm salad.
Some shows have crews of dozens or even hundreds, but not “Somebody Feed Phil.” Its crew consists of around 10 people. This brings a real family vibe to it — especially since it includes Phil’s brother, Richard, who’s the producer.
The show brings a small team from the US, including director John Bedolis and two or three camera operators, along for its adventures.
As I said, one adventure took him to Lisbon, which he admits wasn’t on his list of place to go…but when he got there, he tasted this:
This portugese custard tart is iconic there – and so we went to Phil’s favorite spot – click here to see it up close!
Phil also ate on a pier overlooking Lisbon’s Tagus river….and I mean “overlooking” because here are some of the seats!
We ate some of the same food as Phil did – and here is a Quick Look at one dish we ate and how close we were to the edge:

By the way, as to the power f television: our Server told us they were always pretty busy, but after “Phil” aired around the world they were swamped with visitors!
We also loved Phil’s episode about San Francisco, when he ate at our favorite seafood counter:
This is called a “Crab-santhemum”, their take on the flower! Click here to see where we ate:
As I said, I love food/travel shows, but I also love pure travel, if the locations are unique and the talent exudes the right amount of curiosity and respect for the area:
That was the case here – Actress Joanna Lumley, most famous for “Absolutely Fabulous”, travels to the origin of the nile, and she does it with wit, curiosity, and a willingness to sleep on the deck of a boat like the rest of the crew!

Of course, the “Citizen Kane” of food travel shows was hosted by this Chef/Author:
Anthony Bourdain was the greatest: passionate, curious, acerbic, self-deprecating – he had a wild life and a tragic death and a documentary captures it all…click here for a look at the trailer and more:

We love the show and his unbridled enthusiasm for food and travel…and I like that he doesn’t review anyone he didn’t enjoy – that’s what this show is about – it’s a celebration pure and simple!

I don’t have Netflix, John, so won’t be watching this. But I have had a Singapore Sling in Raffles Hotel! We had to drink it in the courtyard garden, because I was wearing shorts. To drink in the bar, you are required to be fully dressed. :)
Shared on Twitter.
Best wishes, Pete.

Pete, here’s my story about that….we checked into Raffles hotel on our honeymoon trip, after being in Bali for a week. I was wearing flip flops to go to the counter and I was stopped as my shoes were not appropriate for the hotel! Once I apologized and explained we had just arrived they apologized back and bough me a Singapore Sling to say they were sorry! I could have passed you in the bar!

We were there in October 2002, at the same time as the bombing happened in Bali.

Stevie, I say I will try anything, but while they do in fact eat that, we don’t so to jump into something like that, or bugs, etc just isn’t my thing either

Me, too! Interesting idea about one’s own travel show 🤓 We just watched James May’s travel show: 3 seasons so far, Japan, Italy, and India.

There are a number of great ones and I saw May promoted on Netflix I think but haven’t watched yet…now must do…and the Joanna Lumley episodes I’ve watched are really terrific.

Something for me to look up, thank you! I believe the James May travel show was on Amazon, but my memory has never really served me well 😀

Well, I did create a travel for for E! Entertainment Television in the 90’s when I ran programming..it was called “Wild On…” and every episode explored a new place…we made 150 hours of it!
