Joanna Lumley’s “Nile”! An Incredible Travel Show! Joanna’s “Bar-B-Que Of The Body!”

Welcome To The Nile!

Iconic Actress Joanna Lumley took a trip down the incredible Nile river, and took us along with her!

This TV series premiered in 2010, and thanks to Amazon Prime, I have found it and am hooked!

This 4 – hour series follows Joanna as she navigates the river, but more importantly, it also is filled with great insight into the culture of the people who live along this magnificent river in the countries she visits!

The Nile is a “north-flowing” river, the longest in Africa, and has two sources: the “White Nile” begins at Lake Victoria in Uganda, while the “Blue Nile” begins at Lake Tana in Ethiopia….it has historically been considered the longest river in the world, though the Amazon River may be slightly longer.

Either way, Joanna started in Cairo Egypt and went to the source of the Nile, and it’s a great show!

Here’s a short scene, as she is on the river and is told how the Pyramids were built:

Joanna Lumley is a lifelong lover of travel, and has several shows following her around the world – she was born in Kashmir, India. Her father was a major in the Gurkha Rifles, and she spent most of her early childhood in the Far East where her father was posted.

In the series, Joanna travels by fishing boat, ferry, cruise ship, plane, train, car, and even Zapcat!

If you were wondering just how crowded some of these transportation options were, check this out:

That’s is one packed ferry!

In the series, Joanna follows the river from mouth to source. As the show says:

“The 4,000-mile journey takes her from the teeming city of Alexandria to the verdant forests of Rwanda, from the heat of the Sudanese desert to the highlands of Ethiopia, through multiple countries and across thousands of years of history.”

What makes the show terrific is that Joanna travels among the locals and the exact same way as them, including spending the night sleeping on the outdoor deck of a freighter!

Joanna Lumley’s “Body Bar-B-Que!”

This moment, however, is incredible: Joanna visits a off-the-beaten-path roadside market where piles of wood await…she soon discovers what they are for…

Joanna Is About To Be Smoked!

Of course, Lumley is eager to try it herself, and does so on the show!

This ancient beauty ritual is called “dukhan.” It’s like a sauna, but with smoke. Brides-to-be do the ceremony daily leading up to the wedding.

And at least every week, Sudanese wives shed their clothes, wrap themselves in blankets, and sit over pits of burning aromatic woods in the privacy of their yards!

I’m so glad to have discovered this series, one of many that Joanna has hosted. Others take her to India, Japan, the Trans-Siberian Express, Greece and more!

As for Lumley, she was one of the most popular Models during London’s “swinging 60’s” era, and was a “Bond girl” as well!

Joanna is in the “one and done” Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” George Lazenby starred in it, then walked away after one appearance at 007!

Find out why in this fascinating documentary about him – click here for the trailer and more:

As for Lumley, she had an incredible career in film and on London’s theater stages as well – but of course, she will always be known for her role in the British comedy “Absolutely Fabulous”.

Lumley isn’t the only Actor to also host travel shows:

Stanley Tucci went to Italy to explore the country through its food, and it is a great series – click here for more:

Of course, the late Anthony Bourdain was the greatest Travel Host – with shows that combined food, culture, politics and more:

This powerful new documentary is a candid, honest look at his life and death – click here for the trailer and more:

If you want to try a different kind of travel show, then check out this mode of transportation:

Kevin Shelley sold all that he owned, bought a “Narrowboat”, and set out to explore England’s THREE THOUSAND MILES of canals!

It’s fascinating in a “low key” kind of way – the show is on Amazon Prime, and here’s a look at why you should be watching:

  8. John, she is much-loved in Britain, and has done many travel shows now, all of them excellent. Look out for her ‘Silk Road Adventure’, ‘Japan’ , ‘India’, ‘Hidden Caribbean’, ‘Unseen Adventures’, ‘Trans-Siberian Adventure’, ‘Home Sweet Home’ (Britain). I think most are on Amazon now, but I watched them all live on TV here and loved them! She is my favourite travel presenter, bar none.
    Best wishes, Pete.
