Wow! A Classic Pasta Sauce Is Sold To A Canned Soup Company!
Well, this is food news that stunned the culinary world – the famous Rao’s pasta sauces, sold in grocery stores, has been sold to Campbell Soup!
The incredibly delicious Rao’s sauce originated in the popular Italian restaurant in New York of the same name – but it’s incredible success made it a target for a buy – and Campbell Soup swooped in to do just that!
Washington Post Reporter Emily Heil went on to report:
“The brand’s marinara sauce is beloved by many chefs and home cooks who typically wouldn’t opt for a jarred sauce, and it was the top finisher in two Washington Post taste tests of jarred marinara sauces.”
Remember when I shared that story?:
The Washington Post noted that that company made it clear that Campbell’s does not offer a competitor in the “growing ultra-distinctive Italian sauce category,” so hopefully they will just make good on their plan to increase the products visibility…here is the story I shared about the taste test that they dominated earlier this year:
The Washington Post noted that this has sent some shock waves through the food industry:
While analysts praised the deal, some fans worried that the purchase of Rao’s by the major company best known for canned chicken soup might mean a decline in quality. “I will riot if they change this sauce in any way,” one tweeted. “Here comes the high fructose corn syrup,” another wrote.
I made the iconic Rao’s Marinara recipe with their signature Meatball – and then also used the jarred sauce…what happened?

So, the Rao’s sauce is incredible – worth every penny – here’s hoping Campbells understands that!
I love Italian food – like this Timpano:
This is a pasta pie – and a wild Stanley Tucci recipe – and wow, here’s what it looked like when I took it out of its pot:
This family “Timpano” dish was incredible – it is worth the effort!

I love timpano, but I make my own pasta sauce.

I do as well, but the Rao’s sauce IS outstanding even in a jar…it was the ONLY sauce considered worthy of using by The Washington P{out’s taste test. In other words, it will do well in a jam…I made it fresh and compared it to the store bought and they were exactly the same – it only has 5 ingredients!

Thank you, John. I looked up the ingredients, and it sounds pretty good, but unfortunately for us, it’s not kosher.

Let’s hope nothing changes except making the product more visible. This reminds me of when one of the great breweries in Bend, Oregon sold out to Budweiser. The town literally shunned the owner.

This is such an unlikely marriage, but I’m happy for it

I’m not hopeful. I love RAO’s and on the other hand do not care much for Campbell’s Soup (though occasionally I tolerate it.) I assume they’ll try to lower the price and to keep costs low, expect a decline in quality. We’ll see!

Need to take a picture of the current label to document how Campbells degrades the recipe over time.

Great point…when I made it at home exactly as the recipe called for, it’s only 5 ingredients, so any change will be very noticeable…and let me tell you, if you haven’t had it it is DELICIOUS!
