Welcome To Party Central For Sea Lions!
This is Pier 39, located along San Francisco’s iconic Fisherman’s Wharf district – and it is also a gathering spot for hundreds of wild Sea Lions!
These very rowdy creatures frolic in the water and slide up onto the buoys that line the pier…they are fun and free to watch, and they make quite a racket!
Here is some video I shot of them having a good time in the sunshine, while hundreds of tourists gathered to watch!
You can watch them for as long as you can stand the smell – yes, hundreds of Sea Lions gathered do cause a bit of a stink – but it’s worth it!
It’s just one of the many fun things to do in San Francisco – and if it makes you hungry, well there is this:
San Francisco is home to the iconic restaurant “House Of Prime Rib” and yes, that’s what they do and do well!
Click here for the entire menu and wild presentation!
If you want more sea life, why not drive a few hours south of San Francisco to check out these incredible Jellyfish:
You can see more of our incredible tour of Monterey’s Aquarium here:
And if you want more great tourist ideas for San Francisco, why not climb up Coit Tower?
This iconic tower was the site of a classic Alfred Hitchcock movie as well, so of course it was one of my “hitch Hike” stories…see it here:

Hi John, what a lovely sight. All animals smell, that is the case for bush tours too and visits to bird breeding colonies.

Ah, that was the tower for Vertigo! Who doesn’t like sea lions, even if they leave a little stink? I’ve heard that the Monterey Aquarium is incredible. And of course you tell us of the best restaurant. Thank you, John!

Speaking of pier 39, have you seen a guy who hid behind the wall and surprise you? He is “iconic” too but I wonder if he is still doing it🤔

I remember these well from your previous post, John. It is such a shame that they smell so bad! 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

Yes, they do smell. I can vouch for that. We have a colony here in the UK at Blakeney Point in Norfolk. We once took our sons on a boat trip to see them. The boys, being young, were not too impressed!
