Behold Jason Alexander’s “McD.L.T.” Musical Ad! This “Seinfeld” Star Kept “The Hot Side Hot, The Cold Side Cold!”

Remember The “McDLT”?

I love this – someone got their hands on an ad from the late 80’s – starring a “head full of hair ” pre-George Costanza “Seinfeld” Jason Alexander, extolling the amazing virtues of the McDLT!

The Hot Side HOT, The Cold Side COLD!

McDonald’s is always trying new stuff, and bravo to them for that! This was from 1985, as they were looking for the next “Big Mac” idea!

The “McDLT” was sold in a novel form of packaging where the meat and bottom bun was prepared separately from the lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickles, sauces, and top bun and both were then packaged into a specially designed two-sided container!

The consumer was then expected to finalize preparation of it by combining the hot and cool sides just before eating. And to top it off, they ran an ad starring a very lively Jason Alexander!

Here you go – enjoy!

The incredibly talented Actor has a musical background as you can clearly see – and he really knows how to sell a sandwich!

So what Happened To The “McDLT?”

A clever ad campaign couldn’t save this sandwich – but not because of how it tasted.

It was because the world had become more understanding of the negative impact that one main ingredient was having on our environment – STYROFOAM!

Nature Is Calling, And They Are Pissed!

Oops! The company made one mistake they couldn’t add secret sauce to – the packaging!

McDonald’s discontinued the McDLT in late 1990 as it moved away from polystyrene packaging – which was becoming very controversial for a number of reasons…..and was, of course integral to the McDLT “experience”.

So, in this battle of science versus nature, nature won!

Still, that hasn’t stopped this fast food giant from trying other unique food, especially another countries:

Yes, McDonald’s made a “Oreo Spam” burger in China!

And what about this wacky trend in Japan: impaled cheeseburgers!

Yes, these kids today! You can find out who is doing this and more importantly, WHY – by clicking here:

And let’s not forget what happened when I order a “Filet Of Fish” from a McDonald’s drive-thru in rural Texas:

  1. I don’t think we ever had that twin-box burger over here. I doubt I would have ordered it if we had. 🙂
    Best wishes, Pete.

I’m old enough to remember Jason Alexander with hair. Though I don’t watch that much television, I’ve seen every Seinfeld episode. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the perfect cast of memorable characters.

  3. I do remember this and it never appealed to me. probably should have been test marketed a bit more thoroughly before putting in the stores.

  4. Great post, John. Who knew Jason Alexander was so talented pre-Seinfield? McDonald’s thrives on their marketing, and the campaign was good except for styrofoam.

  5. Who knew a burger could cause such joy? 🙂 Too bad it didn’t make it. Btw, I do like an occasional filet-o-fish. But I too prefer it in a bun with special sauce!
