All Together Now: Everyone Yell “We Love Clowns”!
What – you don’t?
You mean this sight doesn’t fill you with happiness?
This gaggle of Clowns are happy and just want to entertain you!
So it brings up a question:
Why are clowns so terrifying?
Well, science now has the answer!
The terrific news site TheGuardian.com has this story!
First, we know that “killer clowns” have become one of the great “scary movie” characters, led by the terrifying “Pennywise” from Stephen King’s horror novel “IT!”
He was, indeed, a “laughing on the outside, crying on the inside” kind of clown…but did you know that clowns have been part of our world for 4,500 years?
The Guardian explained some of the reasons we are so frightened by clowns, “including the way that clowns’ makeup makes them look not quite human, the implicit threat in their exaggerated facial features and their inherent unpredictability.”
Remember this crazy news story of a scary clown spooking a community?
The Guardian also reports that “clown makeup also masks emotional signals, and the color reminds us of blood and death.“
Don’t “Shush” Me, I’m Just Explaining What The Scientists Found Out!
The report went on to state that:
“Some participants were left frightened by a scary real-life experience with a clown, some learned their fear from family members, while others were influenced by negative clown portrayal in the media.”
Ha! So once again it’s the media’s fault!
Well, there are the reasons we can’t enjoy clowns like we used to…so I guess none of us will be taking the owner of this motel up on his offer to sell:
Yep, a clown motel was put up for sale a few years ago…I actually think it sold, probably because who wouldn’t want a “creepy old graveyard” nearby?

If you don’t want to buy, perhaps just visit a “ghost town” and see what might pop up:
I did just that – after all, the Wild West is filled with them – they are cool and a bit creepy too…see my trip to Calico’s ghost town here:
As I said, the media is largely responsible for giving clowns a bad name – like the name “Pennywise”:
Stephen King’s novel “IT”, and the subsequent movies, changed how we viewed clowns forever!

It also helps to have “Pennywise”merchandise that you can bring out every Halloween – like this welcome mat for your front door:
I love this so much!

Hi John, I didn’t even know clowns were supposed to be scary even though I read IT when it first came out. I made a fondant clown and that was when I learned they are now creepy. A shame as I have rather good memories of clowns.

Robbie, it’s interesting how many people are creeped out about them – I have always loved them so it’s a funny phobia to be sure! Thanks as always for the comment!

I always loved clowns, especially those in the circus…until creepy clowns became a ‘thing’. It’s a shame when children are scared of clowns.

My wife is very scared of clowns, and will not look at one on TV, or in photos. She cannot explain why, just says she always has been.
Best wishes, Pete.

Its a common phobia, yes? You can box the clowns and the dolls (Victorian, especially) and stuff them into the closet. Don’t forget to lock the door!

Yes, those dolls are equally unsettling! Thanks for the comment!
