Experience Life As A “Sea Gypsy!”
Can you imagine living your entire life on the water? Well, for a number of nomadic tribes, that is their entire world! Look at this “small town”:
This fascinates me – and an amazing picture by Timothy Allen at “Human Planet”.
These “Sea Gypsies Of Borneo” live their lives on the water, a real life “Waterworld!”
I discovered this story by surfing the internet – and learned about these unique “sea gypsies” and how they live their everyday lives:
As The Daily Mail reported:
“These fascinating images reveal what life is like for the Bajau people – a nomadic tribe who spend their lives on the water.
The group have been dubbed ‘sea gypsies’ thanks to the fact they continue to live a seaborne lifestyle off the coast of Borneo.”
The story continues:
“The Bajau people have severed ties with the mainland, instead choosing to live a nomadic lifestyle on the open ocean.
Standing on stilts above the lapping waves, the Bajau built an off-shore community that relies solely on the ocean to survive.
Instead of learning about algebra or science, the Bajau children are given a net and taught to catch fish, octopus and lobsters off their unique handmade boats. The children reportedly spend so much time in the ocean that their eyes have adjusted to see more clearly underwater and much like sea sickness for those who live on land, they also experience ‘land sickness’ when they leave the water.”
Recently, I read this great book about living in paradise like this:
Could you imagine life on a South Seas island? Well, one young teacher tried it, and he wrote all about the experience – you can see that story here:
Closer to home, I have had the chance to spend a bit of time in the parade known as Malibu:
From incredible beaches to magical sunsets and lots of sea life, check out the beauty of Malibu here:

Amazing!! There is also a lake in South America where people live on the reeds in the middle of the lake. There are so many awesome places in this world.

That watery life would not suit me at all, John. I cannot swim, and I get seasick unless it is dead calm. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.
