Check Into The Iconic Fogo Island Inn – “The Hotel At The End Of The World!”

Welcome To Fogo Island!

Not familiar with the place? It’s OK – Fogo Island is a bucolic getaway off the coast of Newfoundland on the eastern end of Canada…far far away from most of us – and it is known for one of the most unique Inns you have ever seen!

Check-In To The Hotel At The End Of The World!

The terrific website “The Daily Beast” had this great story of a truly unique Inn that exists on the island.

As the first line of the story says:

“Virtually every story about Fogo Island wraps around a moody photo of the inn that Newfoundland-born, Norway-based architect Todd Saunders designed, one of its minimalist white ends perched on two-story steel stilts, all of it standing defiantly on the rocky North Atlantic Ocean coastline.”

How cool is this?

This beautiful photo is by Photographer Jennifer Bain by the way and is part of the Daily Beast story.

I love to travel and would love to see this up close. As the story notes of this island:

“Fogo is part of the ancestral homelands of the Beothuk, the Indigenous people of Newfoundland. The name dates back to the 1520s as Isla (or Ysla) de Fuego (Isle of Fire), a version of a place name the Portuguese and Spanish used in other parts of the world. “It may have referred to fog, shrouding Brimstone Head,” writes folklorist Dale Jarvis in Places Names of Newfoundland and Labrador, noting the island first appeared on maps around 1602, though sometimes as the less evocative Isle of Foggs.”

As you can see, the Inn is an imposing sight from the air…

Those of you who have followed this blog for years know the I love travel, and I love to share stories like this – you can see more of it by clicking on the story here:

I guess I have a fascination with unique hotels and buildings like this one that I shared recently:

Yes, this is “The Interlace” apartment building in Singapore – would you live in it?

I would love to visit the Fogo Island Inn – partly because I read an amazing book about the area:

The story of Newfoundland and Labrador is incredible – as Author John Gillette captured beautifully. You can click here to see an inside look at the book!

I have posted other stories about architecture around the world that breaks the mold to give us art as well as housing – like these unique apartment swimming pools:

Fancy a swim in one of these? If so, you can see the entire story here:

And what about this hotel rooftop pool?

It looks like it goes on forever because it does!

Check out the pool with the most incredible view of Singapore by clicking on my story here:

From large to very very small…what about this “micro apartment?”

Where’s the rest of it?

There is no rest! Click to see just how small “micro apartments” can be!

  5. I would very much like to visit Fogo Island, and stay at the famous Inn. Sadly, that is a very long way from Beetley. 🙂 (2,333 miles, as the crow flies.)
    Best wishes, Pete.

    • Pete, even further for me – more than 3,000 miles…the area is similar to the Pacific Northwest where I grew up, so while it’s gorgeous, it’s a bit like what I already know…so I lean towards more exotic locales going forward but who knows? Thanks as always for the comment, I hope you have a great weekend ahead!
