Welcome To Thailand’s Maeklong Railway Market!
I have only been to Thailand once, but I need to go back – just to shop here – at the Maeklong Railway Market!
It’s a great seafood and vegetable market located about an hour outside of Bangkok, known as the Maeklong Railway Market, because – well, whenever the market stalls are open for business, they block the rails of a working railroad!
That’s right, one of the largest fresh seafood markets in Thailand sits right ON TOP of the Maeklong Railway tracks!
You can find videos on YouTube that show it up close:
So how does that work? Well, merchants cover the tracks with their fish and vegetables, and people shop until a train approaches, then the fish, vegetables, awnings and shop fronts are moved quickly back from the rails so the trains can pass!
Your “3 Minute” Warning!
This is why I love to travel: to experience amazing places like this – FYI, it’s a regularly scheduled train, so they get 3 minutes notice to move!
As you can imagine, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime photo op:
I love exploring unique places, like the time my wife Alex and I went biking through three medieval villages in the “wild coast” of Spain:
An abandoned road has been turned into a bike path that takes you to these incredible villages in the Costa Brava – see the whole story here:
Let me know if you’ve been to this unique train market!

I have never seen anything quite like this, John, even in Africa. I do remember your Orient Express adventure.

This was one of the first places we visited back in 2002 it was wonderful to experience all the canopies rise in unison and come down in unison once the train has passed through…that and the flowing market are must-sees if anyone visits Thailand a fabulous experience 🙂 x

That’s a bit of a shocker. I do like turning the old railway into a bike path.
