The Northern Lights Are Showing Off Again!
I’ve never seen the northern lights, but these images are truly spectacular, and last week, nature showed up again!
I had to share this story from The Washington Post, who does an incredible job of reporting on the environment. As they reported:
“The sun set at 3:23 p.m. Saturday in Fairbanks, Alaska, but the sky was still lit well after dark. A stunning display of the aurora borealis, or northern lights, brought dancing curtains of emerald green and violet that shimmered across the sky.”
“The National Weather Service office in Fairbanks posted a picture of the display just north of the city, revealing diaphanous ebbs and flows of the verdant plasma overhead.”
Here is a video just shared by Bloomberg.
“The northern lights over Willow, Alaska captured in a stunning time lapse on the evening of November 21 by local journalist Jill Burke”:
The Washington Post story goes on to report:
“The lights were courtesy of a solar storm, or an eruption of high-energy particles from the surface of the sun. That burst of electromagnetic radiation hurtled toward Earth, where it reached the threshold of a Level 2 out of 5 “geomagnetic storm.” Earth’s natural magnetic field converts that potentially hazardous energy into harmless visible light.”
The Twitter user @AuroraNotify posted this incredible photo with the caption:
“Phone snap over my car. Nice reflection! North Pole Alaska ~ Amy”
What a show! Just an incredible showcase of the creativity of nature and the world around us…and you know what? You can actually see them from your own private tent!
Yes, there are companies that put on special camping events that allow you to sleep under the northern lights!
These are from Finland, and current pandemic circumstances have impacted their business to a degree, but you can see more about what they do by clicking on my story here:

Woooooow, these are some amazing photos! I really like that shot from the AuroraNotify Twitter user too with the purple-hued sky. Beautiful. Nature really can be pretty freaking awesome. I’d love to go to Iceland one there. There are heaps of companies that do Northern Lights tours, it’s one of those bucket-list kind of destinations.x

Wow! I’d love to see the Northern Lights someday! They’re sometimes visible over the Seattle area though I’ve never seen them. And they aren’t as dramatic as these amazing photos.

They are a fantastic natural phenomenon indeed, John. They are sometimes visible over parts of Norfolk, but it is usually too cloudy in Beetley to see them. 🙂

A glorious sight, I would love to see, John. We missed this event by 7 days when we visited Finland in 2018.
