Want To Sleep In An Igloo – At The North Pole?
Well, the answer for anyone who suffers from “Wanderlust” is easy:
YES!
Yes, a company is opening an “Igloo Hotel” at the North Pole, where you can sleep under the northern lights, surrounding by snow and polar bears!
As Newser reported, it’s not cheap – $100,000 for up to five nights!
And The Washington Post reported:
“Called North Pole Igloos, it will allow travelers to sleep in one of 10 glass-ceilinged, heated domes and spend the day marching around in temperatures between minus 20 and minus 40 degrees. “It’s not for the fainthearted,” says a research scientist.”
Guests at the North Pole Igloos will stay in one of 10 heated, glass-walled igloos at night. It’s a travel experience so unique, it only takes place one month every year – but for who knows how long.
A Finnish luxury travel company is set to open a movable hotel at the North Pole that offers a rare and eco-conscious experience for the adventurous traveler who can swing the roughly $100,000 price tag for up to five nights’ stay. The North Pole Igloos are slated to welcome its first guests in 2020 and will operate yearly every April.
Janne Honkanen, who created Luxury Action—the company behind all this—admits it’s not for everyone. “We provide all of the equipment,” he tells CNN. “But you definitely need to have the spirit of an explorer or scientist.” Honkanen also hopes visitors will become “messengers” to the world about climate change. “I’m really worried about the climate crisis on the planet,” he says. “Because of climate change, we don’t know how many trips we can do up there. The North Pole is a glacier.”

This sounds amazing! I’ve always wanted to visit both of the poles and I think the North Pole would be incredible – I’ve been put off before as I know a friend of a friend who was attacked by a polar bear whilst out there about ten years ago (he didn’t survive, and my friend was part of the expedition as well) which is terrifying, but these sorts of attacks are so rare that I shouldn’t let it put me off. I’m also worried I won’t get there in time before it all melts!

I think you are correct: it is literally melting away – not sure this hotel is close to towpath the cost, but any trip up there would be fascinating! Thanks for commenting!

I’m not sure what to make of this. That part of me that is longing to see the northern lights at least once, is yelling yay… or actually boo! Why is it so expensive?
But then there is that part that is left wondering ‘is it really a good idea to me taking more heat to the arctic’?
Dunno.
Either way, it’s another interesting read from you.

Great point…there are many ways to see the northern lights – so this isn’t unique…and as for the price? Yeah, I agree it’s “prohibitive” to say the last, and do we need to overrun a place that is already under siege from climate change? All great points, thanks for sharing them!

How beautiful I would love to go to the North Pole those igloos are also beautiful sure a fantastic experience but the ticket is a bit too much! To see the Northern lights is one of my dreams but we have other places and opportunities to see them for a much lower price maybe beautiful Iceland or other places! 😉

I would love to do it, but I would settle for a regular Ice hotel as well 😉

This sounds very interesting, John, and so does sleeping in a barrel. We have stayed at game lodges with wild animals just the other side of a fence, but nothing else that interesting by way of sleeping accommodation. Our apartment in Edinburgh was just about entirely open plan with all four beds in one huge room and the dining room, kitchen and sitting room all in another big room.

OK, second try.
I would have to do this, just to be able to sleep under the Northern Lights.
Best wishes, Pete.

Pete, I agree that seeing the northern lights would be so special…not paying this amount, because I think you get them in many cheaper ways as well!

My cousin paid £900 for a three-day trip to see the Northern Lights in Norway. He didn’t see any! 🙂

That’s the problem with nature, it doesn’t always do what you want!
