This House Is Available To Rent!
Yes, the US election is today – and President Trump battles former Vice President Joe Biden to take up residence for the next four years in the most famous “rental property” in the world!
Boarding Up The White House!
It’s a sobering sight: the White House has had a wall built around it to keep people out – as the country braces for the most volatile and contentious presidential election in modern history…
Democracy Underway…
Washington D.C. is the center of our democracy, and every four years, US citizens have the freedom to go to the polls and decide who should lead the country.
These elections are held in all 50 states, and involve not only the Presidency but state races, congress, the senate, and propositions all across the country that impact how we live our lives going forward…they are important.
Sadly, the country is more polarized than ever, but we will see what happens today, and in the weeks ahead.
While things may seem more out of control than ever before, we can hope and pray that the process will work again, and democracy will prevail – AND that we show the best of ourselves and our country to the rest of the world.
The fact is, the US has had a history of some VERY disreputable tenants in the Oval Office.
Like this guy!
The White House has a long history of scandal – and wacky inhabitants – perhaps none more so than the guy you see above – America’s “horniest” Commander In Chief!
President Warren G. Harding had a love child AND a mistress in the White House – a real sleaze ball with stories that have to be read to be believed!
Meet America’s 10th President!
John Tyler was America’s 10th president, from 1841 to 1845. He assumed office after the death of President William Henry Harrison, who passed away from pneumonia after just a month in the White House.
Here is what Harrison looked like while spending his single month in office:
His “Accidency!”
After the shocking death of President Harrison, Tyler took over the office and was immediately nicknamed “His Accidency,” – because Tyler was the first vice president to become chief executive due to the death of his predecessor.
Among his accomplishments was the 1845 annexation of Texas. However, Tyler was also part of the political force that led to the horrific Civil War. Before he died, Tyler voted for Virginia’s secession from the Union and was part of the Confederate Congress.
President Tyler’s Confederate Betrayal!
Because of Tyler’s involvement with the Confederacy movement, President Abraham Lincoln and the U.S. government did not publicly acknowledge Tyler’s death, as the Virginian was seen as a traitor to the Union!
John Tyler – Party Boy!
Let’s step back for a moment and look at another aspect of this controversial President. From a personal tragedy, Tyler went on to shock the country!
Tyler’s first wife, Letitia, suffered a stroke and died in 1842. She was the first “first lady” to ever die while her Husband was in office.
America’s Sexiest First Lady!
Tyler soon squired Julia Gardner, a 22-year-old nicknamed the “Rose of Long Island”. Yes, she was thirty years younger!
America’s Most Prolific President!
In 1844, John Tyler became the first president to marry while in office. The couple went on to have seven children. With a total of 15 offspring from his two marriages, Tyler fathered more children than any other U.S. president in history.
Julia is remembered by many historians as one of the most beautiful First Ladies ever!
There have also been shocking scandals in the White House, like the tragic story surrounding the great President Rutherford B. Hayes:
His Assassin didn’t kill him – the White House Doctors did! It was a shocking time in our nation’s history, and you can read an incredible book that tell the entire story, including how Thomas Edison was part of the team! Read about it here:

This book takes an inside look at the “business of politics”, and boy, it’s wild!

The occupants of the White House were very colourful personalities…literally.

Your Presidents have certainly led very colourful lives and not without scandal…I hope you get the result that you want although the news we are getting is that Trump has/will win…

Not true at all Carol. He falsely claimed victory even with millions of ballots left to be counted…many states count mail-in ballots AFTER the same day votes, and since we had 100-million mail-in votes due to the pandemic, it will take a few days. Biden has won and that will become clear over the days and weeks ahead.

I think the big difference between then and now is the press. Great post, John!

Great reminder of some of the disreputable sorts who have rented the White House. I think Trump will go down as the worst though in the history books.

He is by far, because as well as lining his own pockets, he has ruined our standing in the world.

If only the entire country got to decide. Only the Electoral College decides. Clinton won by over 3 million and still lost the ‘election’

I understand that Don, but those votes were in two states…the idea of the Electoral College is to give all 50 states a voice – and the smaller ones have a much smaller vote. I understand how many want to address it, but she should have gone to Wisconsin at least once during her campaign – AND who would know that a certain third party candidate had tens of millions funneled to her campaign to ensure she got Hilary’s votes..that is to me equally disgusting!

A great slice of US History, John. I wonder how future generations will regard Trump. Could he be the worst yet? Nixon takes some beating too.
Best wishes, Pete.

Nixon at least followed the law. Trump is without any moral center whatsoever…he cares only about himself. He will be shown to be one of the worst con artists in our nation’s history – my story just points out he has company in that category unfortunately!

Thank you! Hopefully we show the best of ourselves today and let the open and free election decide the direction of the country…as my post shows, we’ve made lots of mistakes before!

Hey, mistakes can be forgiven but sometimes when the mistakes go too far, real harm can be done. We have seen the beginnings of this in our current White House.

Thank you – for both reading and for sharing as well…it’s is, at the end of the day, a residence that goes on the market every four years, and the entire country gets to decide who lives there….I for one will be thrilled to have the first ever female as part of the White House leadership, and a woman of color as well!

John, I think so many of us are sitting on the edges of our chairs with our fingers crossed for that exact outcome…

As the counting continues, people will find out that due to the pandemic, millions of votes were mailed that don’t get counted until AFTER the same day votes. Those are 65-70% democratic and it will become clear that Biden’s current 2-1/2 million vote lead will increase, and he will win the necessary states for the Presidency.

I haven’t looked at the news or anything yet this morning! I am too afraid. At least it sounds like Trump didn’t win by a landslide.
