Party With “McLovin’!” Why “Super Bad” Is One Of The Best “Coming Of Age” Films Ever! My “Cult Movie Monday” Goes Back To School!

Who Wants To Party With “McLovin!”

One of cinema’s most memorable characters of the past 20 years is this guy, McLovin’! You see, he’s 25 years old and an organ donor, so he can buy alcohol for a big party that two high school friends are invited to – a party that could make them men forever!

The “Coming Of Age” Hilarity of “Superbad!”

Movies that showcase “high school life” tend to be either outrageously profane or overwhelmingly somber…but on this “Cult Movie Monday”, I am looking at one that manages to both be hilariously funny AND profoundly honest as well…

Seth Rogan and his Writing/Producing partner Evan Goldberg created one of the best high school films ever: the story of two high school seniors who are desperate to be “cool”, just once…and they can be – IF they can score booze for a party!

Check out the trailer, which can only hint at the raucous fun ahead:

This hilarious 2007 film was directed by Greg Mottola and produced by Judd Apatow, and stars Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Emma Stone, Seth Rogan, Bill Hader and of course “McLovin”, Christopher Mintz-Plasse!

This is Emma’s film debut, and she plays the girl that Jonah Hill desperately wants to impress – so much so that he promises to bring booze to her party!

Now, back to “McLovin'” – this was also Christopher Mintz-Plasse’s film debut, and he shines as the goody kid who makes a “unique” choice when getting a fake ID:

Here’s the exchange between Joan Hill’s character Seth and Chrisopher’s Fogell:

Seth: McLovin? What kind of a stupid name is that, Fogell? What, are you trying to be an Irish R&B singer?
Fogell: Naw, they let you pick any name you want when you get down there.
Seth: And you landed on McLovin…
Fogell: Yeah. It was between that or Muhammed.
Seth: Why the FUCK would it be between THAT or Muhammed? Why don’t you just pick a common name like a normal person?
Fogell: Muhammed is the most commonly used name on Earth. Read a fucking book for once.

HILARIOUS.

Of course, NOTHING goes right, which is what makes the film so hilariously funny from beginning to end – especially when Seth Rogan and Bill Hader arrive as two crazy cops!

Here’s trivia you must know:

The word “fuck” is used one hundred eighty-six times int he film.

THAT’S RIGHT: 186 TIMES.

The movie itself is only one hundred thirteen minutes long. That averages approximately 1.6 uses of the word per minute – and eighty-four of them are said by Jonah Hill alone!

Writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg started this script when they were just thirteen years old, because as one of them said:

“we just wanted to see if we could write a movie.”

And they could!

What makes the film work, aside from being truly a laugh riot, is that the film focuses on the friendship between Hill and Cera – and the outside forces in life that are destined to drive them apart…the end of the film is sweet, touching and hopeful, while also being completely honest to what transpires before…

“Superbad” holds up on repeat viewings as well…as does the greatest “coming of age” film of the 80’s:

Yes, “Fast Times At Ridgmont High” is a terrific film about high school life, with one of the most memorable comedic characters of all: Jeff Spicoli!

Sean Penn’s performance is just one of this film’s great joys…you can see the film’s trailer and find out lots of great trivia about the film by clicking on my story here:

“McLovin'” also had a role in another funny film recently:

Paul Rudd and Sean William-Scott star as two guys who, as part of their probation, must counsel teenage boys…it’s really funny, and it has a terrific running gag involving a Paul McCartney & Wings son – you can see the trailer here:
