Nicolas Cage Blows Our Cinematic Mind Agin!
Nicolas Cage has been on a wild run of offbeat films lately – and they have been terrific! His latest film is no exception, so this “Cult Movie Monday” celebrates unique cinema that deserves to be supported!
“Color Out Of Space!”
This great new adaptation of an H.P. Lovecraft short science fiction story is a perfect pairing of Actor Nicolas Cage and Director Richard Stanley.
The film is opening this week, so it’s time to support this duo and their unique cinematic vision!
Stanley is the visionary Director of 1990’s “Hardware” and 1992’s “Dust Devil” – both incredible films….However, “Color Out Of Space” is his first feature since being fired from 1996’s notorious “The Island of Dr. Moreau”.
More on that in a minute, but first, the trailer for “Color Out Of Space!”
The Daily Beast has a great article about the film, calling it:
“a trippy and grotesque vision of the real and unreal colliding in the New England wilderness, energized by memorably out-there effects and its reliably rage-y leading man.”
And what else could you ask for?
The Daily Beast goes on to describe the film this way:
“Unholy rumblings, inhuman moaning, and merged-organism mutations become the order of the day, at which point the film truly taps into the idea that there are dark, distant places full of incomprehensible forces and fiends, and that encountering them invariably leads to a warping of time and space. It’s a grand portrait of normalcy twisted, tortured, and ripped apart by the great and awful things that lurk in the abyss.”
Well, I can’t wait to see it! You can read the entire article at The Daily Beast here:
Nicolas Cage is one of our greatest and most unpredictable Actors, never afraid to put it all out there!
I recently watched SIX new Nic Cage films in a single day – click here to see which one and how I did:
Now back to Director Richard Stanley. He made two terrific films in the 90’s – then ran into this man:
I will admit that I am no longer a Marlon Brando fan: near the end of his life he found it entertaining to make life as difficult as he could for the Directors he worked for, and Stanley was no exception.
This documentary candidly looks at how awful Brando was to the Director, and how it cost Stanley his job…a fascinating documentary – you can see the trailer here:

This looks pretty amazing, John. It is incredible what can be done with special effects.

I love Nicolas Cage and find him always entertaining even when he’s overblown and over-the-top. A true guilty pleasure. Thanks for the head’s up–I’ll watch it. 🙂

Cindy, as a cinephile, you’ll appreciate the creative effort here…and that documentary about “The Island Of Dr. Moreau” is fascinating and Brando’s behavior was shameful, and he had a history of acting really really badly on most of his last films….

Yeah, I heard he was awful to be around. I would like to see both films. 😁

Yes, sad that he chose to treat fellow creatives so badly…

A very ominous “living the dream” delivered by Nicholas Cage in the trailer… Turns out to be prophetic 🙂 Thank you for the teaser, certainly piqued my curiousity, and I absolutely agree, Nicholas Cage’s range of roles is rare in how broad it is, hard to guess what to expect from him next!

He is making a LOT of small films these days, not all of the same high quality as this one, but he rarely fails to entertain! Thanks for commenting!

Yes, it’s a surrealistic poster to accompany the same sort of film…the Director went through a horrible experience with Marlon Brando, and the documentary I link to is a great – and sad – look at how a single person can ruin a creative effort and waste millions and millions of dollars

Thanks for commenting – yes, “Jojo Rabbit” is brilliant! That Director also made “What We Do In The Shadows” – a hilarious “rockumentary” about a group of vampires who share a house together!
