Bite Down On These “No Bun Burgers!” Check Out My Five Wildest “Bun” Substitutes!

Behold The “ALL American” Cheeseburger!

Yes, that is perfection in a photo – a cheeseburger with all of the right ingredients, all in the right shape and size.

I’ve been known to eat a wide variety of burgers – such as the “Pastrami Burger”:

Yes, stuffing a burger with even MORE meat is fun, but the basic concept of the burger remains unchanged…until now: because it’s time to replace the bun!

Here are the five wildest “non-bun” burgers I’ve found!

A “Tater Tot” Bun!”

Let’s get started with a wild one: look at this “Tater Tot” Burger!

A Cheeseburger With A Tater Tot Bun!

Yes, imagine your favorite cheeseburger – add bacon if you wish – all held together by buns of Tater Tots!

I would make – and devour – this in a second! All you need to do it pre-bake your tots, then stack them upright, top with cheese, and stick under a broiler – voila! Once they crisp up they become “Cheesy Tater Tot Buns!”

FYI: Tater Tots were first invented in 1953, and there are now more than 70 million pounds of tots sold each year!

I head now to Japan, where burgers are very popular – and one enterprising Chef decided to do what seemed redundant:

The “Meat” Bun!

Leave it to MOS Burger in Japan to come up with this head-scraping idea: a burger made with a burger bun!

That’s right, a regular burger and topping is held by more meat! If you love what MOS is attempting here, you can click here to get further instructions on how to consume this “meat meat and more meat” product!

I had the chance to eat one of the most delicious burgers I have ever had – thanks to ramen:

Behold The “Ramen” Burger!

That’s right, a terrific cheeseburger is held together by a bun made of ramen – and it is delicious!

It had a terrific crunch on the outside but was soft and tasty inside – clock on my story here to see where I got it – along with a side of “seaweed fries”:

https://johnrieber.com/2016/02/19/l-a-s-ramen-burger-seaweed-fries-octopus-balls-ramen-burgers-galore/

So far, I am willing to concede that, while you may not have seen these, they aren’t reshaping the way you see our world…well, I have a response to that:

The Deep-Fried “Twinkie Burger”!

You read that right: it’s a deep-fried burger with a “Twinkie Bun!”

The legendary PYT burger in Philadelphia garnered lots of press coverage for their “deep-fried twinkie burger”, with deep fried real Twinkie buns! PYT takes a juicy beef patty, tops it with American cheese and bacon, then puts it between two smashed twinkies, fries it up and serves it – and you know what, I’d try it!

As for excess, add this one to the list:

That’s a burger patty with two KFC Chicken buns….and clearly there are no apologies – while that doesn’t look too exciting, here is another angle:

Well, now I’m sold on this “unique” sandwich that makes “liberal” use of KFC Fried Chicken.

As SoraNews24 reported:

“When Kentucky Fried Chicken introduced Double Down, a wicked burger that replaces buns with fillets of fried chicken, Japan went on the offense and stuffed rice in there for an extra twist.”

Well, count me in!

Finally, let’s just concede that all we really needed is this:

A Burger With A “Bacon Bun!”

If you love to add bacon to your burger, this is the easiest way to do it – just create two massive buns using only bacon!

Add a slice of lettuce if you must and call it a healthy meal!

I hope you enjoyed this trip down the dark alleyways of burger mania…

  1. Love the sound of the tater tot one! (we call them croquettes over here). I bet it would be really good with hash browns instead of a bun also! I’d definitely also try the ramen one as that sounds great.

  2. oooph that cheeseburger on tatertot buns looks so delicious!

  3. I would love to try all of them, but especially the tater tot one!! Once I tried portabella mushrooms as the buns for my low carb days – not awful but not great either.

    • I’m NOT a Portabella fan…too thick and imparts too much flavor…the bun doesn’t need to fight the ingredients…that’s why a Tater Tot Burger is the winner, and I’m going to make one soon and share it with everyone! Thanks for commenting, I love your input!

  4. I respectfully have to say that I can’t stomach the burger shots. I love eating burgers but pictures of them make me ill. 😉

  5. Yes and yes to these fun burgers – I am a big fan of meat for what it offers health wise 😉

    • Thanks for commenting! I post some of these because of how ridiculous they are, but there are many burgers that aren’t bad for you, and are a fun way to be a bit creative with food!

      • Well I come from the perspective of meat being good for us and more of a paleo mindset –
And the buns used these days are glue in the GI and so I like new ideas for burgers – and you are right tho – some of these are silly –
But fat does not make us fat –
It is the industrial oils and sugars and bad carbs (and many grains) that lead to
        Clogged arteries and other issues

      • OK, understand better and agree! I cook almost every meal my wife and I eat…all natural ingredients, no added sugars, olive or avocado oil, although butter is OK in certain dishes as well…we keep an eye on how much protein and always buy pasture-raised or wild caught – agree that fat doesn’t make us fat, our body utilized is…but the additives, preservatives and sodium are the thing…thanks for this note its terrific!

      • Wow – I also agree with what you shared – and have been trying to have more organ meats lately – liver once a week if possible
And you are right on with the oils – my son uses only coconut oil to cook with but hubs and I like bacon fat.
Oh and do you like the air fryers? We have really enjoyed ours – makes chicken thighs crispy and amazing – and a steak gets charred a bit with MR on inside ….

      • Thanks for sharing this! My issue with coconut oil is it imparts more flavor than I want – but we use it now exclusively with mushrooms and that is incredible…still waiting on the air fryer – plan to get it this holiday season – cannot wait!

        Liked by 1 person

      • We did not love the air fryer right away – but now it is my favorite thing – his morning reheated some chicken in it and it was crispy and tender
        Have a great day

  7. I don’t know what a twinkie is and some of those are too heavy on the meat for me..I also don’t like burger buns but I love the sound of the Ramon burger …Now over to check it out some more …:) x

    • Well, a few are goofy to be sure! On one of the ramen burgers they used sticky rice as well, but the key is to use a bit of seasoned hamburger in the middle with a nice ramen sauce!

      Liked by 1 person

      • Which is what they do here with the sticky rice burgers and they may well do Ramen burgers they are just not on my radar…I will ask the burger oficinado aka grandson as he may well know …he would eat even the goofy ones as you put just to try…I will show him the post 🙂 x I always look forward to your posts 🙂

  10. These look so interesting, John. Potato is a great option. I am not sure about more meat for me.

  13. Well I am up for trying any or all of those, John.
Including the Twinkie Burger, as I have never eaten a twinkie.
Just don’t ever tell me how many calories are in it! 🙂
    Best wishes, Pete.

    • Pete, a Twinkie is such a pure American invention…we bastardized a nice sweet sponge cake, added some sugary cream filling, and made it so full of preservatives that they literally have NO expiration date…so yes, a perfect burger bun! Thanks as always for commenting!

      Liked by 1 person

      • I know what they are, John. The are not easy to find here though. The places that do sell them (online only) charge silly money for them too.
I remember them from many American films, and always wanted to try one.
        Best wishes, Pete.
