Checking Out Malibu’s Watery Residents!
Malibu is one of the world’s most coveted cities, sitting just north of Los Angeles on the edge of the Pacific Ocean…every day you can walk the beaches and smell the ocean air…
You will see lots of dogs, of course, and surfers as well…Alex and I have rented a house on a beach in Malibu several times, and this is our view every morning:
On this stretch of beach, you see people picking up shells, fishing, and surfing of course, but there are plenty of residents looking back at you as well!
These huge rocks make easy resting spots for hundreds of different birds, and they also hold lots of mussels,w which attach to the rock and get a daily bath from the icy cold Pacific Ocean water…
At low tide, all of the rocks emerge, and all day long, we keep our eyes on the horizon, because at any point we could see other sea creatures as well:
Yes, dolphins are known to frolic off the coastline, and you can see Whales as well at times. Here are a few Dolphins we captured in the distance on our cel phone:
As you can see from the video, at times you only get glimpses of them, and they are fairly far away from shore, but when they are in a pod, you get a good look at a lot of them – even at a distance!
Every morning there seems to be a steady parade of action outside – like this seal who popped up one morning to see what was going on:
Of course, there are birds of all kinds, especially these guys:
The seagulls like to glide overhead and check out the action, even stopping by for a visit – wanted or not! We found this one watching our every move for days:
Then you have cranes, who are more likely to wander along the beach and look for their food in the wet sand…
But I really love to see the Pelicans, who fly high above the ocean until they see exactly what they want, then do a funny dive bomb into the ocean – take a look:
You can tell when a school of fish is going by because the Pelicans magically show up to feed.
I looked down at the water one day and saw these fish coming in close to shore, and they were big!
During this visit, which coincided with the solar eclipse and full moon, the waves were noticeably violent!
From our deck, we watched as the waves crashed into the retaining wall for hours…
I didn’t realize the fish were that plentiful the close to shore, but on this beach, there are surprises everywhere you look, and at the end of the day, it’s a gorgeous place to let your mind wander as the water glistens…
I posted about this magical place once before, as the solar eclipse had me remembering some of cinema’s most epic moments by the sea, many of them shot right here in Malibu:
