The Bears Are Back!
As we all “shelter in place” during this worldwide pandemic, we are seeing a great resurgence of wild life around the world!
Wildlife biologist Ranger Katie, told the press that Yosemite National Park’s wild bears have been noticeably out roaming through Yosemite Valley since the park closed on March 20.
Here’s the report I found:
“For the most part, I think they’re having a party. I think that this time of year is difficult for the animals here,” Ranger Katie said. “There can literally be walls of cars, stop and go traffic or people in the park.”
Ranger Katie said the bears usually find “corridors” to get from one end of the valley to the other to avoid humans. But since the park closure, she said rangers noticed more bears walking through the meadow.
She adds:
“Now that there are no people, the bears are literally just walking down the road to get to where they need to, which is kind of cool to see,” she said.
I love this, as we have forced so many wild animals to vacate their natural space, so it’s great to see them taking it back!
It’s not just happening in the US – what about these wild goats who have taken over the town of Llandudno, Wales – check this out:
The Washington Post looks at places around the world where animals are taking over again – check it out here:
I have posted a lot of stories about wildlife and nature, as I love seeing other species enjoying their natural surroundings:
My wife and I stay in a rental home in Malibu every year, and I can’t wait for the world to get back to a “new normal” so we can sit out and watch seals playing in the Pacificas Ocean again – you can see them here:

I love hearing that some animals are taking their space back – if only for a little while.

This is gorgeous, thank you for sharing. It’s about time the animals had a holiday from the humans, a horrific way to get one though.

What bears wouldn’t want the people to go way so they could go out and play?

I’m afraid John that we do as we humans are selfish species.

I’m thrilled to see this …. let’s hope we can manage to co-exist more kindly with our fellow earth dwellers AND take the benefits to the climate to heart and makes some real inroads into slowing if not halting the warming. As a point of interest, my husband and I found bear scat and footprints about a mile from our home here in Massachusetts …. we do have bears around but that is the closest to our town that we have seen evidence of them. I love bears, by the way 🐻

I hope that people see that we have cleaned our air, improved our health and given more life to the environment around us recently, and perhaps we can continue some of the things that respect the planet more!

Perhaps some of our environmental gains will continue after the worldwide lockdown eases…not rush right back into our worst habits! Hope you are hanging in there “safe AND sane!”

One of the better aspects of the current crisis. The benefits to wildlife, and the halting of climate change pollution. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.
