Wanna Sleep In Al Capone’s House?
Yes, time to head to Chicago’s south side for a chance to own the house where the infamous Gangster Al Capone lived – with his Mother, Sister and Wife!
Sleep In Capone’s Bed!
That’s right, America’s most famous Gangster wants you to “sleep with the fishes!” Well, kind of!
As Newser reports:
A “unique piece of Chicago history” is for sale, and as long as the buyer is handy (or knows someone who is), it could be a steal. Before he lived in luxury in Miami, Al Capone hunkered down with his mother, sister, and wife in a two-apartment brownstone in the Windy City, and Curbed Chicago now reports that building is for sale after its owner lost it in foreclosure last year, per Crain’s. The previous occupant of the gangster’s former abode, who said she’d owned the home in the Park Manor neighborhood on the city’s South Side since the early ’60s, had apparently been trying to get it off her hands for around a decade, with an initial listing in 2009 of $450,000. Capone’s family bought the house in 1923 for just over $5,000. The current asking price: $109,900.
As Newser reported, it’s a fixer upper – but with six bedrooms, two bathrooms and almost 3,000 square feet of living space, it’s a steal for that price!
Time To Excavate Capone’s Secret Tunnel!
Remember when Geraldo Rivera opened Capone’s vault on live TV – and nothing was there? Well, maybe he hid his money in his secret tunnel!
Newsier reports that a bit of Capone’s illegal lifestyle may still exist:
“there was a tunnel that went to the house from the garage,” Ryan Smith, the listing agent, tells USA Today, a passageway that could’ve been used for bootlegging. Smith says a door in the basement may be confirmation of that tunnel, which apparently has been filled in.
Well, I’d certainly dig into that to see if I had a tourist attraction just waiting to open!
Of course, Capone was a cold-blooded killer, but since Chicago has many “gangster” tours that take you to their more notorious sites, why not add this? He certainly left a lot of stories to tell!
The terrific website “Allthatsinterestingcom” has a ton of great facts about Capone and his “business dealings”, but he also cared about people as well, as this fact shows:

So, what do you think? Want to buy a bit of history? Now’s your chance!

Fun to see this today, John. My granddaughter is in Chicago today. She had an audition for The Theater School this morning. Her mother took her around to the places she worked and lived, Lotties (before it was Lotties… I worked there after it was Lotties and set up the kitchen) and Goose Island Brewery.

Good luck to her – we love Chicago!

That’s an absolute bargain, John. Capone’s provenance alone is valuable, so it is indeed worth the money. Just a shame that I live in England. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

Pete, I assume the “tunnel” has long ago been filled in, but there are Gangster tour buses in Chicago that take you to the site of the St, Valentines Day Massacre for example, so why not add this to the tour!
