Chappell Roan, Donna Summer And More “Hot Hot Hot” Summer Songs!

Hot Enough For You?

It seems that the world is on fire: sweltering hot weather in Europe, large parts of the US in triple degree temperatures – what a climate mess we’ve created!

So, I decided to follow my fellow blogger Clive and focus on some great songs that are all about “heat!” Let get started with this classic gem from the end of the disco era!

“Hot Stuff” by Donna Summer

This 1979 smash was from Summer’s acclaimed album “Bad Girls”, which I actually own and it’s really terrific!

As the lyrics show, Donna’s not really talking about the weather, is she?

“Lookin’ for some hot stuff, baby, this evenin’
I need some hot stuff, baby, tonight
I want some hot stuff, baby, this evenin’
Gotta have some hot stuff
Gonna have some love tonight (hot stuff)
I need hot stuff
I want some hot stuff
I need hot stuff”

Enough reading, time to listen!

Here she is performing the song on a TV show in the 70’s:

Next up is one of music’s biggest stars, with a song you can dance along to!

“Hot To Go” by Chappell Roan

Chappell Roan is one of music’s brightest stars right now, and this song was released on August 11, 2023, as a single from her critically acclaimed debut studio album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.

You Can Do The Dance Moves!

Chappell Roan intentionally designed the song with an accompanying dance to perform alongside her audience during live concerts. The choreography spells out the title of the track during the pre-chorus and chorus: [123]

  • H-O-T-T-O-G-O: Spell out the letters with your arms directly above your head, exactly like doing the “Y.M.C.A.” dance.
  • “Snap and clap and touch your toes”: Snap your fingers, clap your hands together, and then lean down to touch your toes.
  • “Raise your hands, now body roll”: Bring your hands back up into the air and perform a fluid body roll.
  • “Dance it out, you’re hot to go”: Move freely and dance with high energy

Here you go – enjoy!

To speak to just how popular Chappell Roan is, this video has 77 million views on YouTube!

Next up is one of music’s most iconic singers:

“(Love Is Like A) Heatwave” by Linda Ronstadt

Another song where the weather isn’t really the point, this classic song is so catchy and fun!

Originally recorded by Martha and the Vandellas (1963), Linda’s voice is perfect!

Here’s a terrific live performance from 1980!

Linda Ronstadt had an incredible career, which I highlighted in this story about her music – and her riveting memoir!

Next up is a song from 1966 that actually is VERY specific about the heat!

“Summer In The City” by The Loving Spoonful (1966)

This band had a string of hits in the 60’s, including this one – that gets right to the heat!

“Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck gettin’ dirt’ and gritty
Been down, isn’t it a pity?
Doesn’t seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people looking half-dead
Walkin’ on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

But at night it’s a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come on, come on and dance all night
Despite the heat it’ll be alright”

I like the bit of optimism at the end there…”despite the heat it’ll be alright”…

Here’s the band performing the song:

Finally, while I wasn’t a big fan of Glenn Frey’s solo career, this song he wrote for “Beverly Hills Cop” delivered!

“The Heat Is On!”

Both the film and the song were massive hits, with the song reaching #2 on the singles chart.

While Frey wrote many hits for the Eagles, this one was written and composed by Harold Faltermeyer and Keith Forsey – here’s Frey singing it:

Frey died suddenly a few years ago, a shocking loss to the music industry…here’s a look at some of his greatest hits:

I was inspired to do this list by my blogging friend Clive, sho shared these hot songs – check them out here!

  2. The Lovin’ Spoonful were one of my favourite bands back then, (still are) and I always had a lot of time for Donna’s Disco goodness! Shared on Twitter, John. (Just played ‘Do You Believe In Magic’ on You Tube. That song never gets old!)

    Best wishes, Pete.
