We Encountered “Water Crossing” Elephants! Botswana’s Elephants Have A Wet Superhighway!

How Deep Is That River? Just Ask Botswana’s “Water Elephants!”

How deep? There’s your answer! Yes, you can clearly make out the “water line” on this massive Elephant, who was casually crossing the Linyanti River Delta in Northern Botswana – and he wasn’t the only one!

Here’s another chapter in my safari adventure: which involved 5 different safari camps across 3 countries over 19 days!

Our encounter with “Water Elephants” took place when we checked into the amazing Wilderness Little Duma Tau lodge on the Linyanti River Delta of Botswana…here is the aerial shot from when we flew over the area:

So beautiful! And as you can see, our room was right on the water, so we saw this happening over and over and over again:

Yes, Elephants used our river delta as a walkway to get to the marshes, so they could graze and graze and graze…we encountered one Elephant crossing as we were on our boat shuttle:

In fact, these Elephants photo bombed my wife Alex when I was taking her photo:

See that dark blotch in the middle of the picture, between the two Elephants?

That’s right, those Elephants weren’t alone: we had some Hippos in the water keeping an eye on us as well:

And there were other animals as well – check out the Impala grazing along the river as an Elephant ambled by:

We also saw another creature getting some sun – yes, it was a Crocodile – and a big one at that!

And here is a video of a lodge boat passing by an Elephant as he crosses the river…which they do all day and night!

As you saw, there were many Hippos in the delta as well…here’s another one eyes us warily:

More on these incredible creatures soon – but if you need them and you need them now, here are the hippos we encountered in Botswana’s Okavango Delta!

And remember this “close encounter” I had with an Elephant at the Duma Tao lodge?

I was less than twenty feet from a feeding Elephant – click here for video of my encounter!

As for Elephants, we ran into massive herds of them over and over and over again on our safari adventure:

Click here to see some very young baby Elephants as we watched them roam along the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe!

It was really incredible to see so many wild animals in thier natural habitati – I want to remind you that all of these animals are protected – click here for the conservation efforts underway here to protect them!

  3. NIce to get out on the water while on safari, and the elephants are lucky to have a trunk that they can breathe through in deep water. 🐘Shared on Twitter, John.
