An Elephant “Tug Of War!” Bloody-Faced Lions! My Wild Animal Safari Has Playful Hippos Too!

An Intensely Focused Lion!

Welcome to the wildest parts of Africa, in this case the Okavango Delta of Botswana, where this Lion offered us a menacing hello!

We are in the wilds of Botswana, where every morning began with a Jeep drive to find animals, like we did one morning when we came across this Lion “post kill”: as you can see, he hasn’t wiped his face yet after his meal:

It’s always a bit unsettling to be so close to an animal so powerful – but that is also what we loved about our safari adventure: the animals have NO restrictions to their movement, and WE are the guests:

That means at any time, a herd of Elephants will wander by your room to graze – and you also see them on the “Elephant Superhighway” – click here to see that that is, plus some noisy Lions as well!

About those Elephants: you never want to say you take them for granted, but they ARE everywhere!

Watch as these two younger Elephants engage in a playful “Tusk Tug Of War!”

Botswana has some of the largest herds of Elephants in the world – they are literally all around you!

Here’s the video of an adorable baby Elephant making a very noisy run for her Mom!

One of the magical aspects of safari life is that our expert guides will track wild animals like Elephants and of course Lions, in this case we ended up comingacross a pride finishing a meal of Kudu…

They really paid no attention to us, but they sure do to each other!

Watch as these two male Lions suddenly begin to fight each other over the remaining Kudu scraps – with us just a few feet away:

Don’t worry, our expert Guides keep a close eye on the animals and we follow their instructions carefully to make sure we do nothing to get their attention….need proof? Note how this Lion got very bored very quickly:

And speaking animals who seemed bored by us, we also enjoyed spending some time watching this Hippo frolic in a pond:

Yes, he seems a bit bored as well…take a look, I got him right as he opened wide and then joined his friends in the water:

Some of our plans were directly impacted by the animals, like the time we showed up for a Mokoro canoe adventure, only to find this guy standing in front of our boats!

Here’s the story of that wild adventure – we ended up doing a mokoro and you can see how it all ended here:

And one of the most amazing days happened when we ran into 17 Lions!

There were so many we couldn’t get them all in one shot! And one Lion was upset about something as he wandered by us:

Click here for lots of video of the Lions, plus our unexpected encounter with wild dogs too!

  2. Seeing nature the way it is and should be left, with as us as guests, really does make one recall the many zoo visits made around the world in a different light. Love the different moods of anger and boredom and satiety and just plain ‘living’ by the animals your drives have allowed you to see . . . thank you for sharing . . , and, no, the lions do not seem to have serviettes handy 🙂 . . . !
