“Come Undone” Indeed!

As we head into Valentine’s Day weekend, two of cinema’s brightest stars “come undone” in a new take on an iconic romantic novel!

“Wuthering Heights” is Emily Brontë’s only novel, published in 1847.

It’s a classic of English literature known for its passionate, dark, and tragic story of love, revenge, and obsession between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, set on the bleak Yorkshire moors. The novel explores themes of social class, nature, and the supernatural through a complex narrative structure, detailing how the intense, thwarted love between the protagonists destroys them and those around them, and how their legacy affects the next generation. 

Here is the first – and most iconic – film made from the novel, released in 1939:

There have been at least four other adaptations after the original 1939 release – but for this Valentine’s Day, a new film is being released with two of Hollywood’s biggest stars:

The newest film version, written and directed by Emerald Fennell, is a bold reimagining of the novel, focusing on the passion, lust, and madness between the main characters. It stars Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff and Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw

The trailer suggests a sweeping, haunting romantic. drama and the advance word on the film is very strong – and with these two in the lead, I’m all in!

Variety’s review captures the tone of the film perfectly:

“For nearly two centuries, Brontë’s book has been a romantic fantasy for readers. Fennell treats it as an erotic one as well, leaning into all that is sensual.”

the casting is perfect: Margo Robbie was “Barbie” of course, and Jacob Elordi was most recently Frankenstin’s Monster – and is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role!

I’m excited also because of who was behind the camera:

Emerald Finnell has become one of cinema’s most interesting Directors – and she won the Best Screenplay Oscar for “Promising Young Woman” – here’s one of her terrific films:

Finnell directed “Saltburn” in 2023,, a dark dark comedy with a terrific cast including Elordi – it’s wild, and wildly good – here’s more about it, including the trailer if you don’t know it:

Since it’s Valentine’s Day weekend, and there are so many easy ways to see classic romantic comedies, here are a few more to try:

“Under The Tuscan Sun” took a real-life memoir about rebounding after divorce by refurbishing an abandoned Tuscan villa and turned it into a terrific romantic comedy starring Diane Lane.
