“Rocky Raccoon” Welcomes You To New York!
New York spring days are gorgeous, so I went for a walk in Central Park, and found a new friend!
Reports put the Raccoon population in Central Park at 300-500 at any time…while they usually come out at night, here’s what I found yesterday on a walk through “The Ramble”, a very woodsy part of the park just north of Bethesda fountain:
I named him “Rocky Raccoon” to honor the song by The Beatles…he seemed uninterested in the people like me who stood and photographed him…he was intent on finding something that was buried in the ground – here’s more of his adventure:
I’ve seen a few other wild creatures in Central Park, like this Hawk – also uninterested in me – here’s the video:
Squirrels are everywhere of course: there are more than 2,400 of them – I see tourists stop to take pictures and video – and one New York tour guide told me it’s because they aren’t as plentiful in many parts of the world…here they are everywhere!

And the Turtles are always popular here – I got this video of Turtles coming out of the lake to snatch food that was placed on the step…take a look:

Every time I walk through Central Park I stop by to see how the Turtles are doing and guess what? They are doing just fine – remember when I saw a young child petting one?

Beware of raccoons in the daytime, John. They’re often rabid. I enjoyed your videos. Central Park is incredible. Few know how much there is to explore, and you are a great source of knowledge. Thank you for that!

Oh John, thank you for a huge morning smile – I usually leave your videos until later but the word ‘squirrels’ brought lots of childhood memories back and now I do feel I have just walked through your beautiful Park – thank you! I so remember the Schnell’i Lake park in the centre of my birthplace, Tallinn – well the large colony of resident squirrels wanted the chestnuts on the ground, but any I saw were mine, mine, mine – and, oh boy, could they scratch when angry 🙂 !!!

Thanks for this comment…there is an annual tradition in Central Park: people forage for chestnuts here as well…you see lots of people doing it as there are so many nut-laden trees!

You know, that’s great to hear. I’m always saying how much wildlife we’ve lost here due to crowding, but NYC? That gives me hope!

To be able to see such animals in a hectic city like NYC is a joy. And the fact that they pay no attention to humans is a good sign that they are not harmed by anyone.

Yes Pete…the park is incredibly safe, and there are so many different types of wildlife there…what I love about the park most is everyone you pass is speaking a different language, because we are ameltin pot for all – it is a VERY welcoming city to everyone!

They are a mean animal but they are left alone in the park and keep to themselves…a daylight sighting is unusual…they don’t like us either!
