Who Has #Wanderlust?
With the news in the US getting grimmer and darker, whenever I see an image like this, I imagine escaping to a slice of paradise like this, far removed from civilization and chaos….do you?

Let’s Escape To “Dulcie Island!”
Well, according to the map above, this will do the trick!
The terrific FB page “Some Amazing Facts” shared these about Ducie Island, which is part of the Pitcairn Island chain…as they wrote:
Ducie Island is one of the most remote coral atolls on Earth, located deep in the South Pacific Ocean. It lies about 540 kilometers (335 miles) east of Pitcairn Island—the nearest inhabited land—and nearly 9,600 kilometers (6,000 miles) from the Americas. As part of the Pitcairn Islands, it is a British overseas territory.

This small, ring-shaped atoll consists of four islets surrounding a lagoon. Though the land itself is barren, the island serves as an important sanctuary for seabirds such as frigatebirds and boobies. Beneath the surrounding waters, vibrant coral reefs thrive, supporting a rich variety of marine life.

Ducie Island is uninhabited and rarely visited, apart from occasional researchers or passing yachts. With no infrastructure, fresh water, or permanent residents, it remains one of the last untouched places on the planet—a rare glimpse into a world almost entirely free from human influence.

Of course, there are many magical getaways on this planet…like Pitcairn Island, which Ducie is near:

The original “Mutiny On The Bounty” island has a fascinating – and troubling – past…a group of four volcanic islands in the southern Pacific Ocean that form the sole British Overseas Territory in the Pacific Ocean…a Writer received permission to move there and was troubled by what she discovered – and wrote a terrific book about her experience…see that story here:
I have shared other books about people who moved to a south seas island, like this one: where a teacher took an assignment for a year in paradise:
As the title says, it’s not that easy living in a place like this – you can see this terrific book here:
And my favorite memoir of all is from “Castaway” Lucy Irvine, who followed up that incredible true-life adventure with this:

Her story is fascinating as well…see it here:
Of course, island living might not be for everyone – unless it’s only a part-time island!

That’s right: Sicily’s Isola Bella is an island twice a day – at high tide!
Here’s a look:

While Ducie Island looks wonderful, it would need running water, a hotel, electricity and a supermarket before I’d visit there! I do enjoy my creature comforts.

Steve, I’m glad you caught some of the “issues” related to moving there…it has nothing! But it is part of a chain of islands that have some of those…still, I think I agree that hanging out on a beach in hawaiii for a week may be the way to go! Thanks for commenting, always great to hear from you!

The Pacific Islands are a marvel. I think of James Michener’s time there in WWII. Thank goodness he wrote about the islands. And, thank goodness Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote a musical about the islands. And, thank goodness for your wonderful geography post. Really!

“…whenever I see an image like this, I imagine escaping to a slice of paradise like this, far removed from civilization and chaos….do you?” Yes, I’m ready. When does the plane leave? How are you reading my mind? It’s not even horrible horrible weather on the East Coast. But yes, I’m ready to go now. Ha, ha.

It looks so peaceful, serene…and no screaming newscasts or websites trying to make us angry about everything! My wife and I drove to Utah twice in the past few years to see Zion National Park and wow, that did the trick as well! Thanks for the comment!

Oh, now you have me thinking about ZNP. My oldest son and I traveled there a couple of years ago. It was a very quick trip . . . but such an amazing place. Really did calm the soul.

We were at two of the more popular locations, but they say the less-visited western side is spectacular as well…we also went to Yosemite for the first time and loved it as well…the idea of seeing nature up close and getting away from a crowded city! Thanks for the comment!

We are all fascinated with islands. I have been to Mont Saint Michel and it’s little English sister Saint Michael’s Mount, both you can walk to at low tide and beautiful. Not sure how I would get on in the Pitcairns.

Ducie Island looks beautiful. What level of tariff has Trump hit it with?

HA! Let me check with the penguins there to find out! It would be funny if it wasn’t so disgraceful…if you saw the marches all across America yesterday, his “very slim” victory in November was NOT a landslide OR a mandate, and people are waking up to the harsh reality of a disgraceful leader doing disgraceful things to hurt our country and our standing in t he world…

Everything he and his sycophants do just brings more shame on your country – a truly sad state of affairs. I fear it will only get worse, and he is taking most of the world down with him too.

And we ‘own’ it, whoopee.

So that means it gets a 10% tariff, then 🤣

They look so beautiful in a photo, but I can imagine life there as being remote and difficult in the extreme. I think I would soon be sending out my ‘message in a bottle’, John. 😊
Best wishes, Pete.

Pete, I point out there is NO fresh water, so I recommend anyone heading there to pack accordingly! I just need an escape form this horrible world … hundreds of thousands of protestors nationwide letting our “leader” know we are NOT happy with the chaos and destruction underway here to our country. People are losing their retirement savings and more for NO reason!

I am sure Pitcairn Island has water even though it’s only rainwater, you could try there first. I can understand your need to escape the madness over there.
