It’s A Bird…It’s A Plane…
Everyone who lives in Southern California has gotten used to seeing this unique “streak” across the night sky. So what is it?
Well, it’s the future of space travel!
A SpaceX rocket launched Monday from Vandenberg Space Force Base northwest of Santa Barbara – and as usual, it left a long trail of exhaust that was illuminated by the setting sun.
That’s an exhaust plume trailing the capsule as he zooms across the sky…as reported:
“Elon Musk’s enormous “mega rocket” which didn’t carry a payload or people, did not survive the landing on Thursday. But it did cruise through space and plummet back through Earth’s atmosphere before exploding, a watershed moment for SpaceX, 22 years to the day after it was founded.”
Here’s why thee launches are such a big deal. The report goes on to note:
“The rapid progress of the Starship-Super Heavy launch system’s development offers high hopes the 400-foot-tall behemoth will be fully functional — and fully reusable — very soon.”
The mega-rocket part of Musk’s plan to lower the cost of these launches to about $10-million per launch!
Here is the really cool video I captured when my wife Alex and I were visiting friends in Pasadena, and just happened to look up at exactly the right moment – I put the video to the song “Rocket Man” because it just seemed to make sense!
At the time I shot this, the launches weren’t publicly acknowledged ahead of time, so it was quite the mysterious surprise – here’s what I posted about all of the activity underway in outer space!
With talk of going back to the moon, we can’t forget that we are also on Mars right now:
NASA is sending back lots of cool videos from he surface of Mars…see some of it here:
And hav you ever wondered what outer space sounds like?
Well, it does make a sound and someone put it to incredible visuals of the heavens…check it out here:

How amazing, John, It reminds me a bit of a jelly fish in a tank with lighting.

That’s an amazing video you made. I always find it mind-boggling to think we’re just floating around in space.

So cool, and what luck that you were in the right place at the right time. I love the rocket’s big smile, too.

I am a notorious ‘killjoy’ when it comes to space exploration. I watched the Moon landing when I was 17, and nothing much has changed since, other than satellite communication systems and the space station circling above Earth. I concluded long ago that (in my opinion) it is a monumental waste of money that could be put to much better use. Call me a ‘Space grump’, I don’t mind. 👴
Best wishes, Pete.

We had a conversation about it just last night…what is the value of going to the moon and beyond? Not clear but boy does it cost a lot of money!
