“Everything Everywhere All At Once” Clears Oscar’s Table!
The 2023 Academy Awards ceremony is over, and it was one of the most satisfyingly emotional shows ever! More on all of this year’s winners, but first, let’s celebrate Michelle Yeoh, the first Asian to win Best Actress!
She’s one of the most celebrated action stars, with roles in film like “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” and the James Bond film “Tomorrow Never Dies” – and had appeared recently in films like “Crazy Rich Asians” – but now, she made history in this year’s big Oscar winner!
The Wildly Original Brilliance Of “Everything Everywhere All At Once!”
This brilliant Oscar-winning Best Picture blew me away – from the unique story to the inventive storytelling techniques, and the incredible cast – this film will blow your mind!
First, you DO NOT want to know too much! That said, I will give a brief overview: Michelle Yeoh stars as the owner of a dry cleaner…she and her husband have been summoned to the local IRS office, along with her father, played by the legendary Actor James Hong. Her husband is played by “Goonies” star Ke Huy Quan.
Oh, and look who the IRS Bureaucrat is?
Yes, the film has a hilariously intense supporting role by Jamie Lee Curtis! Her comedic skills are on full display in the movie, but there is much much more!
Stephanie Hsu plays their daughter – she’s best known for her terrific roles in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Shang Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings.”
What happens next can only be described as mind-blowing, when Michelle discovers that she is just one of an infinite number of HERSELF across all time and space!
Here is the trailer, that only scratches the surface of this truly original film experience:
Director Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert won the Best Directing Oscar, very well deserved as “The Daniels” as they call themselves, have created an incredibly funny, touching, and action-packed sci-fi movie that touches on so many genres while staying completely true to its own unique vision!
While you get Michelle Yeoh in full fighting mode, you also get a nuanced, rich portrayal of a woman who sees what she could have been in so many of the different lives she’s led – it’s truly an amazing film and spectacular, career-topping performance!
Yeoh took home the Academy Award for Best Actress, along with her two co-stars who won supporting categories…and bravo as well to Brendan Fraser for winning Best Actor for “The Whale!”
And yes, Ke Huy Yuan and Fraser worked together in “Encino Man” – and now they shared an Oscar stage!

I am excited by cinema that connects us to other cultures, like this beautiful film about a young woman desperate to save her ramen noodle shop – click here for more about the terrific movie “Tampopo”:
There are also some incredible TV shows that capture the cultural diversity of our world – even if the storytelling is brutal at times:
The South Korean TV series “Squid Game” became a pop culture phenomenon – and for good reason!

Obviously I must see the movie. I especially loved Jamie Lee Curtis’s acceptance speech. When she said (with heart), “My parents were nominated for Academy Awards. I just won an Academy Award.” Wow, I was choked up at how she said it.

Yes! Know that it is VERY quirky and once it goes into the meta verse it’s a crazy ride, but worth it – very emotionally satisfying

I didn’t watch any of the hype, but I was glad to see such an ‘off the wall’ film win so many awards. Part of me thinks it was very political though, making sure that diversity took centre stage. I will look forward to watching the film eventually.
Best wishes, Pete.

HI John, a great evening with fantastic winners. My husband watched All Quiet on the Western Front but he didn’t like it that much. Maybe you have to read the book to understand the film properly.

I was sent that one Robbie but just don’t have an interest in that war again…1917 did it for me!

Fair enough, John, war films can be tough to watch (and the books to read – I am in China currently, reading about the cultural revolution.)
