RIP Charles Grodin… An Appreciation – From “Rosemary’s Baby” To “Midnight Run” and More!

RIP Charles Grodin…

Such sad news: one of the most gift Comic Actors who also wrote a hilariously self-deprecating look at his life, has died at his home in Wilton Connecticut – he was 86 years old.

He was a terrific character Actor in films like “Dave” , “Beethoven”, “Heaven Can Wait” and so many more….I’m going to pay homage to him with three of this performances….

His son, Nicholas, told The New York Times that the cause of death was bone marrow cancer. A spokesperson said Grodin died peacefully at his home.

Grodin Helps Satan’s Baby!

Yes, Charles Grodin made his movie debut as the Obstetrician who refuses to help Mia Farrow during her agonizing pregnancy…

We know how that ends…it’s one of the most shocking endings ever to a film, and one of the great horror films of all time…you can read all about it here:

“Rosemary’s Baby” Shocks #31DaysOfHalloween! Satan Breaks Up Mia Farrow’s Marriage To Frank Sinatra!

Grodin’s breakthrough role was in the 1972 comedy “The Heartbreak Kid.” It’s the story of a man who meets the girl of his dreams – while on his honeymoon!

Here’s the trailer:

Elaine May directed and wrote the film, and her own daughter Jeanne Berlin plays the wife who gets dumped while on her honeymoon, once her new husband sees Cybil Shepard!

This is such a great film, and Eddie Albert steals the movie as Cybil’s father, who meets his daughter’s new girlfriend – the newlywed!

Grodin made so many films, but this is to me his greatest role ever! He’s an Accountant who steps money from the mob, gets arrested by the FBI, and once out on bail disappears, and Robert DeNiro is the Bounty Hunter hired to catch him!

“You’re Gonna Suffer From Fistaphobia!”

The film is action-packed, but also hilariously funny, with a dozen memorable one-liners as Grodin is caught by DeNiro, who must get him cross-country to LA by midnight Friday!

As DeNiro says to him at one point:

“I’ve got two words for you. Shut the fuck up!”

Click here to see the trailer and all of the great one-liners!

I plan to seek out many of his films to enjoy him again…and I will re-read the first of his many great non-fiction books:

“It Would Be So Nice If You Weren’t Here…”

This hilarious memoir includes that comment said to him once – by a legendary Entertainment personality…it’s just the first of dozens of hilarious stories of his time in show business…

RIP to a great comic legend…

  2. Consistently good in every role, and stole Midnight Run from DeNiro. I was surprised that he was 86. For some reason, I though he was around my age. Nice tribute indeed, John.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  5. I had the pleasure of working with Charles on The Heart Break Kid. Believe me he is funny and warm in person as he is in movies. The movie was hard work, long hours, and a lot of retakes. Both the cast and crew loved the fact that Charles always managed to get us laughing and break the tension. What a great guy! And what a fine actor!
