We have Pancake Day too. But ours is not until the 16th of February this year. I am not religious, but I think it has something to do with Lent.

16 FEb is when we celebrate Shrove Tuesday too, Pete. It is the last day before Lent and people used up all their animal products like butter and eggs before the Lent fasting.
