“What We Do In The Shadows” This Halloween! “Cult Movie Monday” Has The Original, Hilarious Short Film!

Celebrating “What We Do In the Shadows” For Halloween!

Yes, I love this time of year, because I can turn off all the lights and enjoy some spooky Halloween fun – including this brilliantly funny “Mockumentary” about Vampires!

“What We Do In The Shadows” is the hilariously fake documentary about a group of Vampires struggling to survive in New Zealand. One of the Writers and Directors is Taiki Waititi, who went on to make the Oscar-winning “JoJo Rabbit!”

What sparked an idea to make a fake film about Vampires!

Well, thanks to the internet, you can see the origins of this brilliant film!

Here is the original 2005 short film that sold the concept to investors!

The setup is simple: Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav are vampires who are finding that modern life has them struggling with the mundane – like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.

Enjoy!

The expanded film, when released in theaters, set out to answer a very important question:

Where Do Vampires Come From?

Well, thanks to the brilliant Writer / Directors Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, here’s a great quote from the film that explains it all:

“One day I was selling my wares, and I walked past this old, creepy castle, and I look at it and think, “‘Very old and creepy”. And then this creature flies at me! It dragged me back to this dark dungeon, and bit into my neck. And just at the point of death… this creature forced me to suck its foul blood. And then it opened it’s wings, like this, and hovered above me screeching, “Now… You are vampire!” And it was Petyr. And we’re still friends today.”

It’s hilarious funny, and a perfect change of pace for Halloween…and now that there is a TV series on FX in the US, you can follow along with the characters even more!

One of the film’s Director, Taika Waititi, went on to make the brilliant “JoJo Rabbit” – see the trailer for the film and lots of other great insight information about his brilliant film and Director Waititi by clicking on my story here:

  5. I never fancied this film, and still haven’t watched it. Then the BBC did a comedy series based on it, and I really didn’t enjoy it, despite being a fan of Matt Berry. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0005bkw
I conclude that I prefer my horror to be scary, not funny.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  6. I wish I enjoyed it as much as you did, John. Maybe it caught me on the wrong day. It felt a bit long and not always as gripping as I’d hoped. I thought I’d find it awesome, as the premise was certainly up my street. For some reason it just felt pretty unmemorable. Perhaps it deserves a second watch. Great write-up! x
