A Sea Of Cortez Fish Convention!
Yes, this is how many fish you have surrounding you when you snorkel of the coast of Cabo San Lucas….because these “Cabo” fish love to eat!
My daughter Jessica and I spent a few days in Cabo recently – I’ve posted other stories already, and those links are at the end of this story in case you missed them – but on this day we were headed out to snorkel, thanks to the incredible company Cabo-Adventures, which loaded us up on a boat and took us to this gorgeous cove:
It took only a few minutes to don our masks and fins and jump into the water, which was cool and relaxing in the eighty degree December sun – and as you can see, no one warned me about my hair before they took this picture:
The Cabo-Adventures Photographer jumped in the water with us, and took these great shots of us snorkeling, as well as the sights around us:
As you can see from above, there are fish everywhere here – hundreds and hundreds of fish that swim right up to you and stare in your face – you can literally touch them…which made this an incredible snorkeling adventure:
The next day, we went on a sailboat cruise and they dropped Anchor in this cove again, and Jessica did some more snorkeling, and then we discovered the reason fish are everywhere around you: they want to be fed!
You see, it’s easy to get a crowd here – just toss them some food – in this case, a dinner roll!
Check out what happens!
It’s hilarious just how ravenous these fish are – imagine if they were Piranha! But they don’t bite, they just swim all around you waiting for food, and here is what happens when you toss crackers and bread into the water from the boat – but first, this as a bonus:
Yes, this guy doing a headstand on his paddle board because – well, who knows why?
As you can see, the fish literally come out of the water to get fed – it was a great way to end a day of snorkeling – again, the people at Cabo-Adventures are terrific, the best way to have a Cabo adventure…oh, and did you know one of the other boats had an extra passenger for awhile?
Check this out!
Oh, and we also saw incredible Whales as well!
Yes, they came across eight Humpback Whales as well, which we travelled with for a few minutes, see the video here:

Wow, that looks like a wonderful place to do some snorkeling. Beautiful pictures, the water looks incredible! I could sit on that paddle board (not headstand) for quite a while enjoying the water.

Your daughter is gorgeous, John. It is nice to have a daughter and a son although I adore my two sons. I have never snorkeled but this looks amazing. The feeding fish reminded me of piranha fish before I read your comment about that very same thing. I find the idea of flesh eating fish horrifying.

Robbie, it all started when we began snorkeling and I realized the fish were coming right up to us – literally bumping into our masks! They are everywhere, prompted by the bread rolls tossed in the water…just like Piranha but luckily not interested in us! It’s a gorgeous, friendly place to visit! Thanks for commenting!

This is fabulous! The sea lion melted my heart. Give me a raft and a glass of wine, and I would never leave. 🙂

Beth, it’s a really easy place to fly into, a small airport and lots of great places to stay at all price points…a totally tourist destination, so they have a ton of fun activities, food and bars, etc. resorts are gorgeous and a trip by boat to snorkel or whale watch is magical!

Fish do get used to being fed, in touristic areas. I cannot swim, but I would sit in the boat happily, watching them all around.
Best wishes, Pete.

Pete, it’s absolutely gorgeous, the water is lukewarm, and they give you a life preserver if you want to float around – and they serve drinks!

That’s right Pete, you never have to go into the water, just take a nice trip to see dolphins, whales and feed the fish! And lots of drinks!

What fun! I’ve never been to Cabo but hopefully will make it someday. I could certainly use some of that sunshine right about now!

You really should go….non-stops from Seattle, small town with a tiny airport that works very efficiently. A total tourist destination so designed for ease, fun and lots of day trips on the water that are very reasonable and fun!
